We therefore ask you to lay your hands upon her and in the power of the Holy Spirit

Consents of the House of Bishops When the reading of the testimonials is ended, the Presiding Bishop requires the following promise from the Bishop-elect In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I, Karin Lee MacPhail, chosen Bishop of the Church in Southwestern Virginia, solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to conform to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church. The Bishop-elect then signs the above Declaration in the sight of all present. The witnesses add their signatures.

All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says the following, Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, you have heard testimony given that Karin MacPhail has been duly and lawfully elected to be a bishop of the Church of God to serve in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. You have been assured of her suitability and that the Church has approved her for this sacred responsibility. Nevertheless, if any of you know any reason why we should not proceed, let it now be made known. If no objection is made, the Presiding Bishop continues Presiding Bishop: Is it your will that we ordain Karin a bishop? People: That is our will. Presiding Bishop: Will you uphold Karin as bishop? People: We will. The Presiding Bishop then says The Scriptures tell us that our Savior Christ spent the whole night in prayer before he chose and sent forth his twelve apostles. Likewise, the apostles prayed before they appointed Matthias to be one of their number. Let us, therefore, follow their examples, and offer our prayers to Almighty God before we ordain Karin for the work to which we trust the Holy Spirit has called her.

The Ministry of the Word All sit. The First Reading : Isaiah 61:1-8

Margaret MacPhail

Reader: A Reading from the Prophet Isaiah. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for those who mourn in Zion—to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks; foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines, but you shall be called priests of the Lord; you shall be named ministers of our God; you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. Because their shame was double and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot, therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The People remain seated for the singing of Psalm 100. The Choir alone sings verses 3 and 4.

The Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-10

Kristin Tadlock-Bell

Reader: A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; as he says also in another place, ‘You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’ In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Page 11

Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. The Gospel Reading : John 20:19-23

Deacon: People :

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, Lord Christ. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If

you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord People : Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Examination All now sit, except the Bishop-elect, who stands facing the bishops. The Presiding Bishop addresses the Bishop-elect,

My sister, the people have chosen you and have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your election. A bishop in God’s holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of lords and King of kings. You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. With your fellow bishops you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow him who came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Are you persuaded that God has called you to the office of bishop? Answer: I am so persuaded. The following questions are then addressed to the Bishop-elect by one or more of the other bishops, Bishop : Will you accept this call and fulfill this trust in obedience to Christ? Answer : I will obey Christ, and will serve in his name. Bishop : Will you be faithful in prayer, and in the study of Holy Scripture, that you may have the mind of Christ? Answer: I will, for he is my help. Bishop: Will you boldly proclaim and interpret the Gospel of Christ, enlightening the minds and stirring up the conscience of your people? Answer: I will, in the power of the Spirit. Bishop: As a chief priest and pastor, will you encourage and support all baptized people in their gifts and ministries, nourish them from the riches of God’s grace, pray for them without ceasing, and celebrate with them the sacraments of our redemption? I will, in the name of Christ, the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. Answer:

Page 14

Bishop: Answer:

Will you guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church?

I will, for the love of God.

Bishop:

Will you share with your fellow bishops in the government of the whole Church; will you sustain your fellow presbyters and take counsel with them; will you guide and strengthen the deacons and all others who minister in the Church?

Answer:

I will, by the grace given me.

Bishop:

Will you be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor and strangers, and defend those who have no helper?

Answer:

I will, for the sake of Christ Jesus.

The Nicene Creed All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says,

Karin, through these promises you have committed yourself to God, to serve his Church in the office of bishop. We therefore call upon you, chosen to be a guardian of the Church’s faith, to lead us in confessing that faith. Bishop-elect We believe in one God. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A period of silent prayer follows, the People still standing. The Prayer of Consecration The Presiding Bishop prays

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come to pass: We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings, and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen. The Laying on of Hands The Presiding Bishop and other Bishops now lay their hands upon the head of the Bishop-elect, and say together, Therefore, Father, make Karin a bishop in your Church. Pour out upon her the power of your princely Spirit, whom you bestowed upon your beloved Son Jesus Christ, with whom he endowed the apostles, and by whom your Church is built up in every place, to the glory and unceasing praise of your Name.

Page 16

The Presiding Bishop continues, To you, O Father, all hearts are open; fill, we pray, the heart of this your servant whom you have chosen to be a bishop in your Church, with such love of you and of all the people, that she may feed and tend the flock of Christ, and exercise without reproach the high priesthood to which you have called her, serving before you day and night in the ministry of reconciliation, declaring pardon in your Name, offering the holy gifts, and wisely overseeing the life and work of the Church. In all things may she present before you the acceptable offering of a pure, and gentle, and holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and power and glory in the Church, now and for ever. The People in a loud voice respond: Amen. The People sit. The Vesting & Presentation of Gifts The new bishop is now vested according to the order of bishops. The symbols of office given to Bishop Karin are on page 31. A Bible is presented with these words: Receive the Holy Scriptures. Feed the flock of Christ committed to your charge, guard and defend them in his truth, and be a faithful steward of his holy Word and Sacraments. The Presiding Bishop presents to the people their new bishop. The Clergy and People offer their acclamation and applause. The Peace The new Bishop then says, The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. The Presiding Bishop and other Bishops greet the new bishop. The People are asked to remain in their places as they greet one another. The new Bishop also greets members of the clergy, family members, and the congregation. Announcements and Welcome from St. John’s, Roanoke

The Holy Communion Offertory Sentence The new Bishop says, Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.

–Ephesians 5:2

The People remain seated during stanzas 1-4 of the Offertory Hymn, standing for stanza 5. Offertory Hymn “Christ be our Light”

Page 18

The Offertory The Offertory today will be designated for the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, to assist in her ministry among us around the Diocese. The Gifts for Bishop Karin are dedicated to the Glory of God and in honor of her Ordination this day by the people of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. Members of her family give the gifts and vest her as a Bishop. More information about the gifts and a list of individuals and churches who donated towards their cost is on page 31. The Dogwood Flower Bishop Karin’s ordination vestments, crozier, pectoral cross, and ring are all adorned with dogwood blossoms. “The Legend of the Dogwood Tree” tells the story that flowering dogwoods used to be large, mighty trees with big, straight branches used in construction. The cross on which Jesus was crucified was made from the wood of a dogwood tree, but this caused the tree great anguish. Jesus had compassion for the dogwood tree, and he blessed it by giving it blossoms that would burst forth every spring, just in time for Easter. He also transformed the dogwood into a much smaller tree, with narrow and crooked branches, so that its wood could never again be used in a crucifixion. The flower of the dogwood tree consists of 4 petals that form a cross, the symbol of our salvation. The rough and bumpy middle resembles Jesus’ crown of thorns. The tips of the flowers are shaped as if they bear the dent from a nail, and those dents sometimes have traces of red, reminding us of the blood of Jesus, shed for us. Today dogwood trees and their flowers symbolize rebirth, purity, strength, and resilience. The dogwood is also both the state tree and the state flower of Virginia, serving as a wonderful symbol for our diocese’s next chapter with our new bishop. The Great Thanksgiving The People stand. Bishop: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Bishop: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Bishop: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Page 19

The Bishop continues, It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after the resurrection sent forth the apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus

The People remain standing. The Celebrant continues, Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and maker of all. Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Page 20

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, Almighty God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Christ. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Savior. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord’s Prayer Bishop : And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues

In the Ordination today, Bishop Karin is vested with the traditional symbols of her office: A Stole, Pectoral Cross, Ring, Cope, and Mitre. She is presented with a Crozier and a Bible. She will wear a Chasuble to celebrate Holy Eucharist. The Bishop’s Crozier has been carried by the Bishops of Southwestern Virginia since 1960. It was given to Bishop Marmion, third Bishop of our Diocese by the youth of Christ Church, Martinsville, in recognition of his work to integrate the diocese. The names of the bishops who have carried the crozier, including Bishop Karin, are engraved on it. The Rochet was given by St. Elizabeth’s, Roanoke, as a sending gift to celebrate her 8 ½ years of ministry among them. The Stole was given by +Karin’s friends Amy Gonzalez, Amy Feira, and Sarah Field. The Pectoral Cross was given by St. John’s Episcopal Church in Odessa TX, the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas, Frank Deaderick, and Lacliffta Newby, +Karin’s sending parish and diocese. The Ring was given by Susan Russell and Carol Reichert, family of +Karin.

A Note of Thanks Thanks be to God for the grace and presence of the Holy Spirit among us today!

Thank you to everyone who has made this beautiful day of celebration and new beginnings possible. The dedication and service of the Search and Transition Committees, the Standing Committee, and the Diocesan Staff have been remarkable, and I am in awe of the time and talents you have shared over the past year. These faithful servants have blessed our diocese in a season of transition and discernment, and I am incredibly grateful for them all. Thank you to everyone serving in the liturgy or helping in other ways today and to all of you who are here to join the celebration. Thank you especially to my family, old and new friends, and our diocesan partners in mission and ministry who join us today. Thank you to Alexander, Peter, and Maggie. Your love, support, and encouragement sustain me and keep me grounded every day. I would not be the person I am without you, and I am blessed beyond measure to have you all in my life. Finally, to all my beloved siblings in Christ in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, thank you for the confidence and faith you have placed in me by calling me to be your bishop, to serve you, lead you, and walk alongside you as we discern where the Holy Spirit is calling us together in community and in mission. I am thrilled to be on this joyful adventure with you! Yours in Christ, Karin
