A Culture Of Giving

Ways to Give

Dear Friends,

The Warm Hearth Foundation provides a variety of opportunities to give: Cash Securities Real Estate/Personal Property Charitable Gift Annuities Planned Gifts/Life Income Gifts Corporate Matching Gifts Memorial/Honorarium Gifts Life Lease Refund Donations Online Donations Volunteer Donate to The Treasure Trove Thrift Store Bequest Gifts In-Kind Gifts

As we reflect back on the Warm Hearth Foundation’s many successes in 2019, it is safe to say that Dr. Kroontje’s vision - that aging with dignity is the right of all persons - is alive and well at Warm Hearth Village. In the 46 years since Warm Hearth Village was founded, we have translated this vision into a plethora of opportunities to support our residents in their efforts to live their very best lives. 2019 was no exception – the expansion of our Micah’s Programs, made possible largely through the efforts of neighbors helping neighbors, exemplifies our vision “to nurture a transformative culture where people live and work in community, knowing their contributions are essential to our success.” As you will see in these pages, there are so many ways to give. Monetary contributions increased significantly in 2019 – and so did non-cash giving in the forms of: volunteerism; in-kind gifts of shelf-stable groceries; donations of produce, personal care supplies, and pet care products; access to wellness and fitness programming; and so much more. Your life-enriching support – no matter what form it takes – is truly a fitting tribute to Wybe and Marietje Kroontje’s resolve to, in their own words, “make a lasting contribution to the well-being of the American people.”

On behalf of Warm Hearth Village and the Warm Hearth Foundation, thank you for your generosity.

Funds

Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment Our endowed fund was established by residents as a way to build a safety net for seniors in need or those who spend down their resources well into the future. The fund was started with a $5,000 gift more than 19 years ago and now stands at over $1.4 million. The Foundation strives to grow this fund to provide sound financial footing for the organization and so that earnings from it can be used to support seniors for many generations to come.

Strategic Growth & Campus Revitalization Warm Hearth Village is an innovative provider of senior services in our region. As a nonprofit organization, we are continually challenged to provide superior quality care and services while making programs affordable to our residents. We seek and use donated funds for land acquisition, new construction, transportation resources, endowed Human Services positions and specialty programming designed to meet the unique needs of people over 55.

Employee Growth & Development Warm Hearth Village has grown immensely over the last 45 years and now employs more than 300 people in careers that range from nurses to groundskeepers and everything in between, in both residential and home care settings. Our employees are the cornerstone of our organization, and one of our most valuable resources. We raise funds to support employees through scholarships, training and education, professional development and employee appreciation initiatives.

Neighbors In Need More than one-third of the nearly 600 residents who live at Warm Hearth Village are seniors on low, fixed incomes. We struggle to keep pace with the growing needs and rely on our donors and the community for help. Our Neighbors in Need fund helps us fill in the gaps for these seniors and fulfill immediate needs such as food, shelter, health care, personal care supplies, pet supplies and emergency assistance.

The Micah’s Program

In 2012, the Warm Hearth Foundation in Partnership with St. Michael Lutheran Church, began a program called Micah’s Soup for Seniors to help combat food insecurity on our campus. Micah’s Soup for Seniors now serves 100+ households monthly in our Trolinger and New River House apartments. Since 2012, our Micah’s Program has grown beyond Micah’s Soup for Seniors to include: Micah’s Garden | providing fresh produce, and promoting more nutritional dietary options throughout the year. Micah’s Personal Care Items | providing access to items such as soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, toilet paper, incontinence products, and more. Micah’s Pets | helping residents to keep their pets, resulting in numerous proven health benefits in addition to promoting exercise and socialization for pet owners.

2019 Micah’s Program Expansion

Micah’s Meals | providing a hot, prepared meal once a month made with excess ingredients from both Warm Hearth’s kitchens and the Virginia Tech Campus Kitchen (VTCK) . This program and partnership with VTCK not only provides a no-cost meal to our low-income seniors, it reduces food waste and promotes sustainability in both kitchens. Micah’s Pantry | providing an additional monthly food delivery to qualifying residents in our Trolinger and New River House apartments in partnership with Feeding Southwest Virginia. This new initiative also increased the distribution of shelf stable grocery items and fresh produce to our neighbors. Micah’s Helping Hands | A resident-driven effort to support the Micah’s Personal Care Items program. Led by Joan Hansler, Nancy Felch and Lou Talbutt, residents in our WoodsEdge neighborhood, this ongoing collection of supplies helps support the needs of low-income seniors on our campus.

4th Annual Parrot Strut 5K

Kaleidoscope

The Warm Hearth Foundation expanded recognition opportunities on campus with the unveiling and dedication of the Kaleidoscope wall at the Kroontje Health Care Center. This cheerful collection of butterflies now greets guests and serves as a touching tribute to family and friends, both past and present. Gifts to this new program directly benefit individuals on our campus who cannot afford the cost of their health care needs through the Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment. The Kaleidoscope is part of a larger recognition program at Warm Hearth Village, that includes the Giving Tree at Karr Activity Center, and a variety of other naming opportunities in the buildings, neighborhoods and outdoor spaces across campus.

The Foundation held the Parrot Strut 5K trail walk/run on Warm Hearth’s campus. Residents, community members, sponsors and staff came together for a fun run while supporting a great cause.

Grants

New River Valley Association of Realtors Grant | This $2,000 grant was used to purchase cleaning supplies for a special Micah’s Personal Care Items holiday distribution to our 144 Trolinger and New River House apartments. C.E. Richardson Foundation & Corning Incorporated Foundation Grants | Grants awarded from these charitable foundations were used to provide meals for residents receiving charitable assistance at Showalter Center and the Kroontje Health Care Center. Trolinger Trust | This grant helps support low-income seniors on our campus through the Resident Assistance Fund, helping to fund the purchase of essential items such as dentures, eye glasses, and hearing aids. Walmart Grant | Funds from this grant were used to purchase supplies for the Micah’s Personal Care Items program. In addition to these grants, Warm Hearth’s HUD Service Coordinator Grant was renewed in the amount of $76,000 . This grant funds a Service Coordinator position to assist low-income residents in the Trolinger and New River House apartments at Warm Hearth Village.

Grant awards play an important role in the Foundation’s work. Grants given by local organizations are especially meaningful. BB&T Lighthouse Project | Each year, BB&T branches select a nonprofit to support through the bank’s Lighthouse Project. Branch employees volunteer with the organization they select, and the organization receives a $1,000 grant. The Radford and Christiansburg branches selected the Warm Hearth Foundation as their 2019 Lighthouse Project. Employees from both branches spent time volunteering with Micah’s Soup for Seniors and Micah’s Meals, and grant funding was used to purchase laundry detergent for Micah’s Personal Care Items.

Donors - The Lifeblood of Our Foundation The Warm Hearth Foundation held its annual donor appreciation event in September, 2019, inviting its donors to Warm Hearth Village for an evening of gratitude featuring good food, good music, and good friends. Donors were treated to a full barbeque dinner from Hethwood Market, including their signature pulled pork barbeque, mac and cheese, green beans, and banana pudding. After the meal, local bluegrass band County Connection provided entertainment at Warm Hearth’s World War II Memorial Park. Join us for Donor Appreciation

Rock Steady Boxing

Thanks to donors to the Warm Hearth Foundation, the Rock Steady Boxing program grew in 2019, as the Warm Hearth Village Fitness Center added additional classes and a new Parkinson’s Support Group to its regular schedule. Residents and class members from the community led an initiative in the spring of 2019 to help fund the program’s expansion. The funds raised were used to send Fitness Director, Kenny Harrah to Phoenix, AZ for the second annual Rock Steady Coaches Conference. This advanced, “Level 2” training for active, certified Rock Steady Boxing coaches offered more in-depth training and the chance to connect with hundreds of coaches from around the world to share their expertise and experience.

In 2018, Warm Hearth Village became the first senior living community in Virginia to offer Rock Steady Boxing, a unique exercise program designed to help those living with Parkinson’s disease.

The Treasure Trove Thrift Store The Treasure Trove Thrift Store in Christiansburg entered its third year in business in 2019. All items sold in the store are donated by residents at WHV and the greater community and all proceeds benefit seniors in need on the Warm Hearth campus through the Neighbors In Need Fund. The Treasure Trove accepts gently used furniture and household items and provides a receipt for your tax-deductible donation. We employ a part-time manager and mover and rely on volunteers to help staff the store Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. We are always looking for partners to help build awareness, provide volunteers, funnel donations and drive shoppers to the store. If you are a member of a civic organization or church group that may be able to help, please reach out to us. Volunteerism at Warm Hearth The Warm Hearth Foundation is proud to operate multiple year-round programs that help fill in the gaps for low-income residents at Warm Hearth Village. These programs would not be possible without our countless volunteers, who work tirelessly alongside Foundation staff to make them a reality. From tending to our raised garden beds to delivering shelf- stable food items and hot meals to running our two thrift store locations, Warm Hearth Foundation volunteers not only give their time, they give life to our unique offering of programs and services. Thank you to those who give of their time to serve others.
