Two Spirituals for Cello and Piano (ED)

Blair’s “five trumpet solos on familiar hymns” use the tunes CRUSADERS’HYMN, DUKE STREET, LANCASHIRE, LAUDES DOMINI, and SPANISH HYMN/MADRID . Think about using these settings nearly anytime during the year. The nuances in meter, rhythm, articulation, along with melodic variation included in these arrangements call for a trumpeter who’ll bring maturity to practicing and playing beyond “hitting the right notes.” The keyboard parts, whether organ or piano is used, will likewise require some dedicated practice time individually and with the trumpeter. I’m calling one of my former university trumpet majors in the next few days with one of these in mind! Reproducible Bb and C trumpet parts are included.

This pair of arrangements, commissioned by a professional cellist, is yet another contribution to instrumental church music from Funderburk’s pen. For the cellist, the more-leisurely “Deep River” ( DEEPRIVER ) features at least a few measures out of first position and a short pizzicato passage. The joyful and less-familiar spiritual “King Jesus Is A Listenin’” will require more practice and rehearsal for both cellist and pianist because of technical and rhythmic complexity, constantly varying articulations, and a lively tempo. That said, the chromatic additions and melodic variations within the piece pull in the listeners right along up to the final glissando. The piano part is idiomatic, though requiring individual practice prior to rehearsal. All in all, experienced and technically-able musicians with the parts learned can put the two spirituals
