tune by Felix Mendelssohn with two different texts available. The first (Lord is a Mighty God) is based on Psalm 95: 3-4 and the second (Lord will Raise You Up) is based on Jeremiah 23: 4-6. This provides great flexibility if you are matching your anthem text with a lectionary reading for the day. If you are looking for a selection to be sung as a two part mixed duet this summer, you may choose the first verse and provide the music to your two singers. This anthem is based on the familiar text by Maltbie Babcock and tune TERRA BEATA found in The United Methodist Hymnal on No. 144 but set to an exciting accompaniment by Mark Shepperd. MorningStar Music and its composer/arrangers continue to provide useful music for instrumentalists; in this issue we have something for at least three instrument families with keyboard. Consider using these settings for summer music in situations where a cellist, clarinetist, or trumpeter are “willing and able” to lend a hand (or two) to our cause.

Subtitled “ten hymns arrangements for the church year,” these settings are sight-readable for experienced or professional clarinetists, and easily learned for nearly all others from very good high school performers on up. The key to working with the keyboardist will be maturity in terms of handling deviations from straightforward melody, observing keys beyond those found in most band rooms, and performing phrasing and articulation so as to fit with the keyboard part successfully. Overall, it will be the keyboardist’s call on whether to use organ or piano; to me, any of the settings could go either way.
