Hymn Partita on “Lord Jesus Christ, With Us Abide” (BA)
I Need Thee Every Hour: Eight Hymns of Robert Lowry (BA)
Kevin Hildebrand, Concordia Publishing House, 977960, 2021.
Edwin T. Childs, Birnamwood Publications, a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, MSM 10-096, 2022. Childs has chosen eight of Lowry’s best-known hymns written in the gospel style: ALL THE WAY, MARCHING TO ZION, CHRIST AROSE, ENDLESS SONG, NEED, PLAINFIELD, HANSON PLACE and SOMETHING FOR JESUS. Five of these hymns are found in The United Methodist Hymnal and another is found in The Faith We Sing. If you want to occasionally play an arrangement of a gospel hymn for a prelude or offertory or postlude during worship, this is an excellent collection to add to your organ library.
This six-part partita is based on the chorale tune ACH BLEIB BEI UNS and is readily accessible to most organists. Two of the six parts are for manuals only and all of the other four have very easy pedal parts. Like most partitas, you can play the entire piece for an extended prelude or you may select particular sections to play for the prelude, the offertory and the postlude on a given Sunday. Hymn Portraits – 12 Settings for Organ (MT) Edwin Childs, MorningStar Music MSM 10-3441. A nice collection based on hymn tunes that were chosen at the request of the arranger’s sister. These arrangements are more than just a melody and some chordal accompaniment. Each setting is well crafted and will make for some great preludes. Tunes listed in this collection are: CRIMOND; DUKE STREET; FAITHFULNESS; FOUNDATION; GORDON; HENDON; ITALIAN HYMN (MOSCOW); OPEN MY EYES (SCOTT); SOLID ROCK; VILLE DU HAVRE; ALL TO CHRIST; O WHEN THE SAINTS
