YULIIA NABOKOVA
Flowers of War
In order to emphasize how current events affect the change in the cultural and subjective worldview of Ukrainians, the artist used elements of folk Ukrainian painting in this work. Petrykivka painting is a Ukrainian decorative and ornamental folk painting style that originated in the Dnipro Oblast in the village of Petrykivka, where the name comes from. Some items with patterns in the style of Petrykivka painting have been preserved since the 18th century. The origin of the Petrykivka painting is associated with the Cossacks and the settlement of the Dnipro region by people from the Poltava region. However, it is not known where and when exactly the traditions formed the basis for the development of this painting style. Petrykiv painting is not only folk art that preserves the traditions of decorating Ukrainian homes, but also modern painting that develops and acquires new features, which is noticeable in the work “Flowers of War” Yuliia integrated volumetric elements with a more realistic style into the conventionally flat visual language of the painting - textured earth and the imitation of water with resin. Separately, the fruits of flowers - grenades - stand out in the composition. The artist herself interprets this decision as a metaphor for military and technological motives sprouting into Ukrainian folk culture. On one hand, it is due to the need for Ukrainians to defend themselves, and on the other hand, it is due to the technological advancement of the Ukrainian army, thanks to all the countries that helped.
