PARTNERS PAWS AND Empowering and transforming the lives of people with disabilities - one dog, one person, one family, one community at a time. the best of friends Gabriella and Bentley

For Bentley, a gentle yellow lab whose whole body wags when he is happy, that particular magic happened when he was matched with a little girl named Gabriella in the fall of last year. In those first few minutes after meeting, Gabriella’s parents saw little glimpses of just how much this could change all of their lives. (continued)

There is so much magic in the moments that make up a Saint Francis Service Dog’s journey. From the first snuggle with their puppy raisers to the final days of training, each small step moves towards the one that matters most – meeting the person whose life they will help transform.

A message from Cabell our executive director

The vision of Saint Francis Service Dogs is about empowering and transforming the lives of people with disabilities, one dog, one person, one family, one community at a time. I love that vision. I love the way it moves from specific to broad and shows the ripple effect of our work. In my mind, I have always viewed it simply in terms of the people we serve. I see it differently now. As many of you know, I raised a puppy named Ivy for Saint Francis. She was accepted into the Breeding Program, and I continued to foster her as we prepared for her first litter. I was looking forward to experiencing this part of Saint Francis – our still young Breeding Program. When Ivy came into heat, I was so excited. I took her to Virginia - Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech to meet with the fantastic theriogenology team for her two transcervical inseminations. Everything went well. She was healthy and happy. Ivy had pyometra – a serious infection of the uterus. It is rare in dogs her age, she is strong, and it seemed that she was battling the illness well. We decided to try to treat it and preserve her ability to breed in the future. Lots of fluids, lots of medicine, lots of attention. By the next morning, I could see she was losing her fight, and we dashed back to Virginia Tech for emergency surgery. And then she wasn’t.

I found out that you can go from being so excited about one potential future (adorable litter of puppies!) to complete terror about another (will she die?) to peaceful acceptance (she’s going to be okay) so quickly it can give you emotional whiplash. I am thankful for the great teams at the Veterinary College and Saint Francis that knitted together quickly to save sweet Ivy. I am thankful for all the patient responses to my many late night and early morning calls and texts, the offers of help, and the constant support. I am deeply grateful to our staff, volunteers, and donors for believing in this work and making it possible for us to do what is right for our dogs so they can do what they do best – making the world better. Ivy will not be a service dog. She will never have puppies. She will become my dog, and I will treasure her brave heart for the rest of her days. She will snore into my nights and shed into my carpets. She will play with me, nap while I work, and monitor the whereabouts of all the squirrels. Saint Francis empowers and transforms lives, one dog, one person, one family, one community at a time. I thought the vision was only about other people.

Until one day, the dog was Ivy, she was in trouble, and the person – was me.

Gabriella and Bentley (cont. from cover)

Now, as Bentley has found his place by their daughter’s side, Josh and Alexis say the difference a service dog has made is more than they could have ever hoped for, measured in the little moments that make up every day. “For some people, going about your normal day – eating, getting changed, going to sleep – it is so easy. But for Gabriella, the smallest things, like just putting on her shoes, were hard for her. With Bentley, all of that has changed in her life,” says Alexis. “We have a new normal now.” Bentley has become a vital source of stability for Gabriella during times of transition and in moments when her environment feels overwhelming. Everyday activities that once felt difficult, like riding in the car, are now manageable, thanks to the comfort and security of having her service dog with her wherever she goes. Josh says, “She keeps her attention on Bentley. It sounds simple, but it has made a huge difference for us.” The bond between Gabriella and Bentley has deepened. He now seems to sense exactly what Gabriella needs most at any given time. Their connection has also given her a growing sense of confidence. Gabriella has become more verbal and is now communicating with Bentley by learning some of his commands. “I think he just knows now when she needs him,” says Josh. “Bentley helps so much with her. Whenever she is having a bad day, he is always there,” adds Alexis. “It has literally changed our entire life.”

And while Gabriella and her family have come to rely on the daily assistance Bentley provides, there are still those surprise bits of magic. They see it when Bentley chooses to go lie next to Gabriella when he knows she needs a little extra comfort or when Gabriella has the courage to try something new. It is in their unconditional friendship and in the joy they sometimes hear bouncing around the room. “He makes her laugh more. That is not something we got to hear a lot before Bentley. He brings her out of her shell,” Josh says. “To her, he is her best friend.”

We can’t wait to celebrate this special team at their graduation this fall!

SCHOOL’S IN SESSION Meet our Service Dogs in Training While some students may be soaking in the summertime vibes, at Saint Francis Service Dogs school is always in session! Right now, these 23 dogs are hard at work (and hard at play), as they continue their journeys to change the lives of people with disabilities. None of this would be possible without the support and love that is poured into each and every one of these sweet pups by our volunteer puppy raisers, inmate puppy raisers, puppy sitters, fosters, dog walkers, trainers, staff, and generous and dedicated donors.

Volunteer Spotlight For Meagan Henry, as it has for so many others, Saint Francis Service Dogs entered her life at a time when she needed it most. Meagan Henry

“Seeing Knox go from a bouncy, chunky little puppy to a full grown service dog working alongside his partner was just amazing. It was such a proud and emotional moment, knowing I had played a small part in something so life-changing,” she says. puppy Meagan, David, and their foster son, Alex, welcomed into their home late last year. “Each puppy I’ve raised has taught me something new - not just about training, but about life, patience, and finding joy in the little moments,” she says. Along the way, Meagan has gained far more than a connection with the puppies she raises. She has become a trusted part of the Saint Francis family - building lasting friendships with her fellow puppy raisers and our staff. After Knox came Levi. Then Salem. And now Ember, the “Saint Francis isn’t just about raising service dogs. It’s a community of people who truly love these amazing dogs and each other,” she says. “If there’s ever an organization you’d want to be part of, it’s this one.” Meagan describes what she does at Saint Francis as “heart-work.” And it is. She leaves a little piece

But it is all worth it, knowing she is helping to change someone’s life.

“I joined the Saint Francis family during a difficult time while I was in the trenches of fertility treatments. It was a heavy season, and one day while scrolling Facebook, I came across a post from Saint Francis featuring their newest litter and looking for puppy raisers. My heart instantly melted,” says Meagan. It could have been a passing moment, but that simple social media post ignited both a passion and a purpose. Meagan took a leap of faith and signed up to become a puppy raiser. A few months into raising her first puppy, Knox, her husband David (who now works as the groundskeeper at Saint Francis) noticed something remarkable. “He had tears in his eyes but the biggest smile on his face, and he simply said, ‘You got your smile, your laugh, and your spark back.’ That moment has always stayed with me. While I have the incredible honor of helping raise and train these puppies, they were also helping me heal in ways I never expected,” Meagan says. The full impact of Meagan’s role as puppy raiser came into focus when she met the young boy Knox was ultimately placed with at his graduation a few years ago.

“Saint Francis truly changes lives in more ways than one. This journey has changed me in the best ways too. I can’t wait to see where it continues to take me.” Thank you, Meagan, for all you do and continue to do to support our mission.

A PUP’S progress

Well, it turns out that Breeding Program is not for me. Here’s what happened. First of all, I came into heat. This is a perfectly normal thing, but for some reason, everyone was very happy about it. I was not thrilled. For one thing, I don’t like wearing a diaper. Secondly, I got pricked with needles a lot so they could test my blood, which I don’t mind, but it was a nuisance. Then I found out I was going to meet a new dog, and I was so excited! You may be thinking this is a story of champagne, red roses, and candlelight (I did, because I watch Netflix), but it is not. It is a story of lab coats, needles, and stainless steel. I never got to play with the boy dog at all. I barely even met him, and he behaved very oddly. Then they whisked him away and took me into an exam room for a procedure where I just stood there and ate really good treats. I could explain, but I am told I cannot “because this is a family newsletter.” Whatever. I can tell you this: it was boring, it took a long time, and I had to do it twice.

Anyway, after that, it was back to business as usual for me. I carried on fine for a week or so until I started to feel tired and a little funny. My person, Cabell, took me back to Virginia Tech to see the doctors there, and they gave me some tests, fluids, and pills. Cabell took me home but watched me all the time, even in the middle of the night. The next morning, I felt shivery and nauseous, so we rushed back to Blacksburg. I don’t know what happened after that. I woke up with a bunch of stitches. I rested for a couple of weeks, and now I am back to normal and feeling great. Apparently, that is it for me in the Breeding Program. My mom, Beatrice, tells me there is a lot of good stuff I didn’t quite get to in the program. But all in all, I am pretty happy with my life now, which is full of playtime, jogs, naps, and friends. Those treats were really good, though.
