Gabriella and Bentley (cont. from cover)

Now, as Bentley has found his place by their daughter’s side, Josh and Alexis say the difference a service dog has made is more than they could have ever hoped for, measured in the little moments that make up every day. “For some people, going about your normal day – eating, getting changed, going to sleep – it is so easy. But for Gabriella, the smallest things, like just putting on her shoes, were hard for her. With Bentley, all of that has changed in her life,” says Alexis. “We have a new normal now.” Bentley has become a vital source of stability for Gabriella during times of transition and in moments when her environment feels overwhelming. Everyday activities that once felt difficult, like riding in the car, are now manageable, thanks to the comfort and security of having her service dog with her wherever she goes. Josh says, “She keeps her attention on Bentley. It sounds simple, but it has made a huge difference for us.” The bond between Gabriella and Bentley has deepened. He now seems to sense exactly what Gabriella needs most at any given time. Their connection has also given her a growing sense of confidence. Gabriella has become more verbal and is now communicating with Bentley by learning some of his commands. “I think he just knows now when she needs him,” says Josh. “Bentley helps so much with her. Whenever she is having a bad day, he is always there,” adds Alexis. “It has literally changed our entire life.”

And while Gabriella and her family have come to rely on the daily assistance Bentley provides, there are still those surprise bits of magic. They see it when Bentley chooses to go lie next to Gabriella when he knows she needs a little extra comfort or when Gabriella has the courage to try something new. It is in their unconditional friendship and in the joy they sometimes hear bouncing around the room. “He makes her laugh more. That is not something we got to hear a lot before Bentley. He brings her out of her shell,” Josh says. “To her, he is her best friend.”

We can’t wait to celebrate this special team at their graduation this fall!
