In the fall of 2006, Doug Thompson, an NRCC graduate and a dual-enrollment teacher at Floyd County High School, received the American Welding Society’s Section Educator Award. Also, Angie Covey, assistant professor and associate vice president for workforce development, was the 2006 recipient of the Outstanding Motorcycle Safety Support Award for securing NRCC as a permanent site for motorcycle safety classes offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). In March 2007, Ben Kramer, activities counselor at NRCC, was named the Earnest C. Jones Advisor of the Year, the top award for the national Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA). In August 2009, Ben Campbell, instructor of English, placed second in the Appalachian Heritage Writers Symposium fiction contest for a short story titled “The Split that Divides.” Another short story written by Campbell, “Strike on the Meadow River,” won third place in Lincoln Memorial University’s Mountain Heritage Literary Festival. Support Staff Awards for Full-Time Employees . Started in 1985, the recognition of a full-time support staff member who has made valuable contributions to the college continued in the 2000s. The full-time outstanding support staff award for 2000 was given to Peggy Stumbo, a buyer specialist in the Business Office. Stumbo began employment in 1979 and retired in 2003. In 2001 Betty McMillan, an office services supervisor senior in the college’s Word Processing Center, was selected. McMillan served the college for 32 years, from 1972 until her retirement in 2004. The 2002 full time support staff winner was Betty Gordon, who started working at NRCC in 1986 and

German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Dr. Billaud also performed a four-movement “Sonata for Piano” written specifically for and dedicated to her by American composer Kent Holliday, professor of music at VT. In addition, Dr. Billaud was a featured performer at the 2009 International Conference of the College Music Society held in Zagreb, Croatia. The lecture-recital “Incantations from the Popol Vuh” featured the piano composition of the same name written by Kent Holliday. In 2005 Carlotta Eaton, professor of information technology, passed the Certified Internet Web (CIW) Site Designer certification. In June 2006, three NRCC instructors received the VCCS Workforce Development Services Chancellor’s Instructor/Trainer Awards for their contributions to the college’s workforce development efforts. Debra Lineweaver, a training specialist, received the award for employee services. Sharon Ruiz, an adjunct instructor, received the award for occupational specific instruction and services. Peggy Dunn, an adjunct instructor, received the award for transitional instructor and services. was devastating and a reminder that even NRCC, with its special culture and student focus, is not immune to societal ills; (2) the presidential search and appointment of Pat Huber as our first female president was a proud moment for the college; and (3) the transition from Blackboard to Canvas was a significant undertaking and demonstrated our adaptability.
