As school districts across the country have dealt with teacher shortages, Montgomery County Public Schools looked for innovative ways to get more highly qualified teachers into the classroom. MCPS is fighting potential shortages head-on, thanks to the addition of the Alternative Model for Professional Studies (AMPS) program. Rather than spending years taking education courses at a college or university, AMPS participants learn educational pedagogy and classroom management from MCPS experts while they teach. Over 32 months, participants learn from MCPS instructors about lesson planning, instructional strategies, grading practices, and professionalism. AMPS instructors ensure that assignments are directly related to teachers' work in the classroom. In 2023, the first three participants graduated from the AMPS program and received teaching licenses. All three graduates of the AMPS program are currently teaching at Montgomery County Public Schools.
