Employee Definitions
It is the intent of Community Animal Clinic to clarify the definitions of employment classifications so that employees understand their employment status and benefit eligibility. These classifications do not guarantee employment for any specified period of time and nothing herein creates a contract of employment. Accordingly, the right to terminate the employment relationship at will at any time is retained by both the employee and the Clinic.
In accordance with federal law, Community Animal Clinic’s jobs are classified as follows:
• Exempt – exempt from the overtime and timekeeping provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and applicable state laws – exempt paid employees are not eligible for overtime pay. • Non-Exempt – covered by the overtime and timekeeping provisions of the FLSA and applicable state laws – non-exempt paid employees are eligible for overtime pay as detailed in the overtime policy outlined in this Handbook and as required by law. • Full-Time – employees regularly scheduled for 35 hours each week on an on-going basis – full-time employees of Community Animal Clinic are eligible for benefits in accordance with benefit plan terms. Under special arrangements by Dr. Beamer, full-time employees may work for Community Animal Clinic for as few as 30 hours per week, with commensurate reduction in salary. • Part-Time – employees who are regularly scheduled for less than 35 hours each week – part-time employees receive legally mandated benefits such as Social Security and Workers’ Compensation Insurance but are generally not eligible for benefits in accordance with the terms of the benefit plans. • Temporary – employees who are hired as interim replacements or to temporarily supplement the workforce or to assist in the completion of specific projects. Employment assignments in this category are of a limited duration. Employment beyond any initially stated period of time does not in any way imply a change in employment status.
