WAYS TO SET UP STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTS

These are permanent funds that support scholarships in perpetuity. Initial Investment: A donor contributes a sum ($10,000) or more to establish the endowment. The principal is invested by the college’s endowment management team, and only the earnings (not the principal) are used for scholarships. PERPETUITY OF THE GIFT Because the principal remains untouched, the endowment provides ongoing scholarships year after year, indefinitely. This gives stability for students and ensures long-term support. ENDOWMENT BUILDING You can build a scholarship endowment at Wytheville Community College by making regular quarterly, semiannual, or yearly donations until the $10,000 minimum is reached, after which the fund begins generating earnings that provide ongoing scholarships in perpetuity. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS ONE-TIME OR SEMESTER-BY-SEMESTER GIFTS These are non-endowed contributions that provide immediate-use scholarship support. Donors can give any amount, and the college can award scholarships right away — useful for urgent or specific needs. SHORT-TERM IMPACT These gifts do not generate long-term funding, as they are used as they are awarded. SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA SUGGESTIONS & NAMING OPPORTUNITIES • Donors often have the option to name the scholarship, establishing a lasting legacy in memory of or in honor of a specific individual. • Field of study (e.g., engineering, education, nursing) • Geographic origin (e.g., residents of a specific county or state) • Financial need (student demonstrates economic hardship) • Alumni affiliation (e.g., descendants of alumni) • First-generation college students • Veteran or military affiliation (e.g., children of veterans) • Merit-based (e.g., GPA, academic achievement, leadership, talent)
