EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. ANNUAL REPORT
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It is with great appreciation and pride that I present the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation Annual Report 2025. The WCC Educational Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to foster and promote the growth, progress, and general welfare of Wytheville Community College (WCC). Over the past year, our Foundation has worked diligently to advance the mission of the college, serve our students, and strengthen our community. With enrollment increasing significantly each year since the COVID-19 pandemic, support of the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation has been more crucial than ever.
In addition to private contributions, WCC is deeply grateful for the support of the Wythe-Bland Foundation, Twin County Community Foundation, and the Smyth County Community Foundation, which provide last-dollar scholarships that cover tuition and fees for each eligible high school graduate in WCC’s service region of Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, and Wythe counties, and the city of Galax. Through investments from WCC’s stakeholders, WCC, aided by generous donors and community partners, is helping more students than ever access higher education and stay on track toward meaningful futures. In addition to direct student support, the Foundation has provided critical funding to strengthen and grow academic programs, equip faculty with the tools they need to innovate in the classroom, and improve campus facilities to better serve our expanding student body. The Foundation is also deeply rooted in the community and supports cultural activities such as the WCC Choir, WCC Concert Band, and WCC Theatre. On behalf of our entire college community – students, faculty, staff, and our boards – I would like to thank each of you for your support of WCC and the WCC Educational, Scholarship, and Real Estate Foundations. My wife, Janie, and I wish you a happy and joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year. Sincerely,
Dr. Dean E. Sprinkle President

VFCCE HONORS DR. RHONDA CATRON-WOOD WITH THE KATHLEEN H. SMITH DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD During the April 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy Luncheon, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) presented Dr. Rhonda Catron-Wood with the Kathleen H. Smith Distinguished Service Award for her exceptional expertise and dedication to advancing the mission of higher education. As Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Wytheville Community College, Dr. Catron-Wood has demonstrated a powerful commitment to student success for more than 30 years. “Her outstanding leadership has been instrumental in generating substantial funding for innovative programs that enrich lives, support the college, and strengthen communities. Her ability to secure resources has made a lasting impact on WCC and its ability to provide quality education to a diverse student population,” said Dr. Dean Sprinkle, WCC President. Dr. Catron-Wood has achieved many notable accomplishments including the successful WCC Forging Futures Capital Campaign from 2002-2006 which raised $3 million and included securing a gift from WCC’s first million-dollar donor. During this campaign, Dr. Catron-Wood also garnered the financial support of 97 percent of WCC full-time faculty and staff and the financial support of 100 percent of Board members which included WCC Local Board, WCC Educational Foundation Board, and the WCC Scholarship Board. In 2024, Catron-Wood led efforts to establish the WCC Real Estate Foundation.
Dr. Catron-Wood was instrumental in securing three college tuition programs that include the Wythe-Bland Foundation, Twin County Community Foundation, and the Smyth County Promise Program. Due to Dr. Catron-Wood’s efforts in securing these three programs, each graduating high school student in WCC’s service region can now attend college with minimal or no cost. On May 18, 2023, WCC announced the receipt of the largest donation in the school’s 60-year history when the estate of Janie (Dolly) Hale Gentry of Grayson County donated $1,338,000 to WCC for scholarships and capital improvements. “Dr. Catron-Wood’s outstanding leadership is enriching future generations, faculty and staff, and strengthening the college’s impact across the region,” said Dr. Jennifer Gentry, VFCCE’s Executive Director.

The prestigious award is named for a pioneer in the world of institutional advancement. Kathleen H. Smith’s selfless devotion and inspiring achievements helped elevate the profession and the Commonwealth. Smith’s storied, 37-year career includes Director of Programming and Fundraising at Ferrum College, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC), and Senior Development Officer for the VFCCE. Smith was vital to generating significant funding for innovative programs that continue to change lives, including the Great Expectations program for foster youth. Dr. Catron-Wood continues to represent Smith’s legacy, advocating for a better future for each and every student. Dr. Rhonda Catron-Wood retired from Wytheville Community College in 2024 after a 34 year career. She continues to serve the college as a consultant.

HONORING LEADERSHIP IN PHILANTHROPY
The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education’s “Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy” honors individuals, families, and organizations who have made significant contributions to Virginia’s community colleges. Recipients from across the state are recognized at an annual luncheon that takes place in Richmond. WCC was proud to be able to honor these philanthropists at the 2021-2025 ceremonies. (Please note that due to the pandemic, there was not an award in 2022.)
2021
2023
Matthew Todd Ridgaway was a long time resident of Rural Retreat, Virginia, and a 1999 graduate of Rural Retreat High School. Upon completion of his high school career, he attended Wytheville Community College.
Mrs. Patricia McClane is a dedicated supporter of Wytheville Community College through both the WCC Scholarship
Foundation and the WCC Educational Foundation. She has made significant contributions to the “Neighborhood Assistance Program Scholarship Endowment” that provides financial assistance to WCC’s most economically disadvantaged students. Additionally, Mrs. McClane established the “Dr. John McClane Memorial Scholarship Endowment” in honor of her late husband; awards from this endowment provide financial assistance to students enrolled in health-related programs at WCC. Later he attended Everglades University to obtain a degree in Construction Management. Todd passed away as a result of a tragic accident in 2009. Todd’s family (Matt Ridgaway, father, and Deedra Crouse, mother) established the “Matthew Todd Ridgaway Memorial Scholarship Endowment” to honor his memory and to provide other students with the opportunity to achieve their goals. The family hosted an annual basketball tournament for several years that raised thousands of dollars for the scholarship. The family continues to make very generous annual donations to the endowment, and many extended family members and friends also support the scholarship.
2025 The Twin County Community Foundation created the “Twin County Community Foundation Community College Tuition Assistance Program” in 2019. The program provides last-dollar tuition scholarships to all qualified high school graduates from public and private schools in Carroll County, Grayson County, and the City of Galax who have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Through this “promise” scholarship program, the Twin County Community Foundation is expanding access to higher education for hundreds of students throughout the region by removing financial barriers. Mrs. Janie Hale Gentry bequeathed over $1.3 million to the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation. These funds have established the “Penick and Janie Hale Gentry Memorial Scholarship Endowment” that will provide financial assistance to students from Grayson County. Additionally, a portion of the funds are designated for a capital project to renovate existing college space or to build, lease, or purchase new facilities to enhance or expand program offerings. The Honorable Thomas Jackson and Cynthia Jackson represented WCC and the Hale Gentry family at the event.

CREATING A LASTING LEGACY The following are highlights of some of the estate gifts that have been received since 2020.
JANIE HALE GENTRY LEGACY Through an extraordinary estate gift, Janie Hale Gentry has helped ensure the ongoing success of WCC and the students it serves. Gentry’s $1.3 million gift established two scholarships—the “Penick & Janie Hale Gentry Memorial Scholarship” and the “June Piper Hale and Virginia Clyde Reeves Hale Memorial Scholarship,” as well as provide funding that helped the WCC Real Estate Foundation to purchase the Crossroads Institute facility in Galax. “We are most grateful for Mrs. Gentry’s incredible generosity,” said Dr. Dean Sprinkle, WCC President. “She and her late husband understood the value of education, and this estate gift will increase access for students through scholarship awards. Also, enabling the college to own the Crossroads Institute will ensure that WCC has a permanent home in the Twin County region to continue offering educational programs to residents.” CHARLES G. CROCKETT LEGACY
Dr. Dean Sprinkle, Dr. Rhonda Catron-Wood, and the Honorable Thomas M. Jackson, Jr. accept the gift – the largest one-time gift to date in WCC’s history.
Charles G. Crockett was a long-time friend of WCC. Prior to his death, he established three scholarship endowments. Two were in memory of his daughters, Angela Denise Crockett and Valerie Jeanne Crockett, and another was in memory of his wife, Betty Jean Hammack Crockett. He was recognized for his generosity in 2018 when he was named WCC’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Over the years, Charles regularly attended and supported WCC events, and through his estate planning, he generously donated to the WCC Educational Foundation to establish a fourth scholarship in his own name. His generosity will indeed ensure that generations of future students will have financial assistance to achieve their educational goals. PHYLIP D. SNAPP & P. BRADLEY SNAPP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT Patricia Snapp and Lauren Snapp Milgrim established this endowment to honor the memory of Phyl and Brad, both of whom were active members of the community and strong supporters of WCC. Phyl served as Chair of the WCC College Board for several years, and Brad served on the WCC Educational Foundation Board for several years and then later on the WCC Scholarship Foundation Board, holding the office of Vice President at the time of his death. The Snapps and their business, S&W Fertilizer & Chemical Company, were recognized as WCC’s 2016 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Phyl passed away in January 2022, and Brad passed away in December 2022. This scholarship provides financial assistance to students who are residents of Wythe County and plan to pursue a career in business or agriculture. DEREK HALSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT This year Wytheville Community College (WCC) lost a valued employee and member of the WCC family. Derek Halsey’s presence touched students, faculty, and staff for over 30 years, including his time as a student and as an employee. Derek devoted his entire career to the college’s Information Technology (IT) department, where his expertise, patience, and kindness left a lasting mark on everyone he worked with. Known for his infectious smile, signature plaid shirts, and willingness to help his colleagues, Derek’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed. In Derek’s memory, friends and family established the Derek Halsey Memorial Scholarship for IT Students. The scholarship aims to honor Derek’s legacy by assisting students who demonstrate academic promise and a passion for technology. HAROLD L. ANDREWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT Through a very generous estate gift, Harold L. Andrews established this endowment. He was a proud World War II Veteran of the United States Navy. Following a career in engineering, he returned to Rocky Gap when he retired. He served on the Bland County Economic Development Authority and was also a strong supporter of the Wolf Creek Indian Village. He believed in the value of education, and this scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving WCC students. MORRIS & CAROLYN HAWKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT The “Morris and Carolyn Hawks Memorial Scholarship Endowment” was established in February 2025 through a gift from the estate of Morris and Carolyn Hawks. Morris and Carolyn met while they were both working at DuPont in Martinsville. After 8 years, Morris was recruited as the 27th employee of the newly established Celanese Corporation, and he spent the remainder of his career with this company, retiring as Executive Vice President. Carolyn was active in numerous community organizations over the years in the various communities where she and her family lived. Morris and Carolyn retired to Fancy Gap. Carolyn passed away in February 2018, and Morris in May 2022. They always encouraged their children, saying “Give 110%--you might just surprise yourself!” It was Morris and Carolyn’s desire through their estate plan to give to WCC to help students achieve their educational goals.
WCC also received estate gifts from the following between 2020-2025: • Jean Cassell—Ralph & Jean Cassell Memorial Scholarship Endowment • R. Cecil & Seawillow Jackson—WCC Drama Department • Faye Kincer—Mr. & Mrs. Lee Hale Memorial Scholarship Endowment • Deborah C. Repass—Unrestricted Funds • Mava Vass—Unrestricted Funds • Veda Hanks Williams—Helen Calfee Hanks Memorial Scholarship Endowment

CULTURE AND COMMUNITY The WCC Choir was established in 2013. Since then, the choir has performed several major choral compositions such as Messiah by Handel, Gloria by Vivaldi, Magnificat and Gloria by John Rutter, Requiem by Mark Hayes, Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest, Dark Night of the Soul and Luminous Night of the Soul by Ola Gjeilo, and the Virginia premiere of Jubilate Deo by Dan Forrest. The choir has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City with members of the New York Symphony Orchestra. They have also performed with the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra. Mrs. Cynthia Jackson is the choir’s director. In June 2023, Jackson received WCC’s Distinguished Service Award that recognizes individuals who have given the college exceptional service, other than teaching, in a manner that is beyond normal expectations and above specific monetary compensation. The Wytheville Community College Concert Band was formed in 1989 under the direction of Dr. Jack White. White was Director of Bands at Elon College from 1962 until his retirement in 1986. Before going to Elon, White had been a very successful high school band director in Southwest Virginia, including service at George Wythe High School in the 1950’s. During his tenure as the band’s director, White was the recipient of the WCC Distinguished Service Award. He was named Director Emeritus of the WCC Concert Band in 2012. Over the years, the WCC Concert Band has welcomed participants of all ages and skill levels, including college students, alumni, and local residents. Mr. Dan Wilner, an award-winning band director at George Wythe High School, currently directs the band and continues the tradition of fostering collaboration between college musicians and community members. The Wytheville Community College Theatre Group , under the direction of theater director Robert Burnett, brings together local community members and college students to create dynamic, engaging performances. Each year, the group presents two full-length plays, ranging from classic works to contemporary pieces. Rehearsals are held on campus and emphasize collaboration, creativity, and skill-building for actors of all experience levels. The productions are staged in the college’s Snyder Auditorium and are open to the public. The group fosters an artistic community and a shared love of the performing arts.
WCC TURNS 60 YEARS YOUNG! Wytheville Community College (WCC) celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a Gala on August 26, 2023, with 175 guests in attendance. The event began with a reception and slide show of historical photos, followed by a program and dinner. Dr. Dean Sprinkle, WCC President, welcomed guests, including numerous alumni, retirees, current faculty and staff, and current and former members of the WCC College Board, Educational Foundation and Scholarship Foundation Boards of Directors. WCC opened its doors on September 19, 1963, as a branch of Virginia Tech, with 107 students enrolled. Classes were first offered in the Simmerman Building in downtown Wytheville. In 1967, the Virginia Community College System was established, and WCC became a part of that system. There was plenty to celebrate at the Gala event as six decades later, WCC’s Wytheville campus now includes six buildings, and there are two off site locations: WCC at Crossroads in Galax and WCC at the Henderson in Marion. Additionally, WCC WEST (Workforce, Education, and Skills Training) serves as a workforce training center in Marion. To date, WCC has helped more than 220,000 students achieve their educational goals.

DR. THOMAS L. BARNES SCHOLARSHIP FUND GOLF TOURNAMENT
Each year WCC honors the legacy of Dr. Thomas L. Barnes who served as the Dean of Students at Wytheville Community College from 1972-2004. Along with serving as the Dean, he was the Director of Veteran Affairs for Wytheville Community College. Dr. Barnes graduated in 1964 from Penn State University with his doctorate degree in education, afterward accepting the position at Wytheville Community College. Dr. Barnes served honorably in the United States Navy from (1964-2002) and retired as a Naval Captain holding many high-ranking positions at various duty stations around the world. Dr. Barnes led and managed various activities in Wytheville and surrounding county communities, along with serving as the president of the Lions Club. Dr. Barnes was a soldier, educator, and community leader, and the Appalachian Warrior Foundation Scholarship Fund set in his honor provides the same opportunities for other veterans. Dr. Barnes not only served our country honorably but also helped to educate others along the way. Dr. Barnes was a dedicated proponent of higher education, and the scholarship fund will be a lasting symbol of his passion and generosity. The annual golf tournament fundraiser in his name supports students who are veterans or first responders.
