Wytheville Community College Commencement Program 2024
The Annual Commencement of Wytheville Community College
Saturday, May 11, 2024
Wytheville Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race (or traits historically associated with race including hair texture, hair type, and protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists);, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, political affiliation, genetics, veteran status, pregnancy or childbirth, or disability when the person is otherwise qualified in its educational programs and activities or employment. The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Malinda Eversole, Director of Human Resources, 105 Carroll Hall, 1000 East Main Street, Wytheville VA 24382, 276-223-4869. For further information, see the list of OCR enforcement offices for the address and phone number of the office that serves your area, or call 1-800-421-3481.
History of Wytheville Community College The doors of Wytheville Community College opened in September 1963 as a two-year branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Classes for the 107 students, who were taught by five faculty members, were held in the Simmerman Building in Wytheville. Construction of the present campus complex began in 1966 on 103 acres that had been purchased the previous year. The first building, Fincastle Hall, was occupied in 1968. WCC became a part of the twenty-three-member Virginia Community College System on July 1, 1967, with a service region of Bland, Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe counties; the city of Galax; and the eastern portion of Smyth County. The college serves more than 2,900 students annually through credit courses. Over 100 full- and part-time faculty teach at the college. With this year’s total included, over 13,000 people have graduated since the first commencement in 1968, and thousands of area citizens have been served through non-credit courses, seminars, and workshops. In 1981, a significant milestone was reached with the establishment of the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., and in 1998 the WCC Scholarship Foundation was also established. Contributions to these non-profit organizations provide for scholarships and enhance educational programs and facilities at the college. The Tradition of Caps and Gowns American academic costumes originated during the Middle Ages in European universities. Students and teachers were set apart from other citizens by the gowns and hoods which were practical attire in cold, damp buildings. The basic parts of the costume vary by academic level. The ornamental fold of cloth worn around the neck, the hood, is the most distinctive feature of the costume. The colors of its velvet band and lining are representative of the wearer’s field of learning. Color Code for Academic Hoods

HONORS Students whose academic performances warrant special recognition graduate with Honors. The three levels of academic honors are as follows:
CUM LAUDE (3.2 to 3.49 Grade Point Average) MAGNA CUM LAUDE (3.5 to 3.79 Grade Point Average) SUMMA CUM LAUDE (3.8 to 4.0 Grade Point Average)
Students wearing the following honor cord colors will be signified for the appropriate honor: Cum Laude - White Magna Cum Laude - Burgundy Summa Cum Laude - Gold Graduates wearing gold stoles are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the national scholastic honor society for students enrolled at two-year colleges. Apricot cords denote Nursing Honors. Graduates who are veterans or active military. * These graduates have completed their college degree and/or certificate concurrently with the high school diploma. All persons listed herein completed their curriculum requirements during fall semester 2023, or are candidates for spring semester 2024 or summer term 2024. The order of degree presentation and the listing in the program may not coincide because students receiving more than one award select the curriculum for which they are recognized. The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, with its medieval origin, symbolizes the academic authority of the faculty. It is used for ceremonial occasions such as commencement exercises and presidential inaugurations. The Professor Emeritus will lead the faculty procession and carry the ceremonial mace. The mace was designed and machined by Don Alexander, retired Associate Professor of Machine Technology, in the college's Machine Technology Laboratory.

The Honorable Anne B. “Annie B.” Crockett-Stark Honorary Associate’s Degree in Humane Letters
At this year’s commencement, the college is pleased to present an Honorary Associate Degree in Humane Letters to The Honorable Anne B. Crockett-Stark.
The Honorable Anne B. Crockett-Stark is an alumna of Wytheville Community College who has achieved significant success in her personal and public life. After completing numerous courses at WCC, she transferred to Radford University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1969. She later earned a Master’s degree in Community College Guidance in 1979 from Radford University. The Honorable Anne B. Crockett-Stark has contributed significantly to WCC in numerous ways. She was an adjunct English instructor from 1974 to 1980. She was later employed as a grant-funded counselor until she transitioned to a full time role developing a counseling program for Wythe County Public Schools, where she worked for 32 years. She has served as a member of church, community, and civic organizations and raised funds for many charitable causes. One particular example is that she was one of the founding members of the Wythe Arts Council and Chautauqua Festival. In 1978 she began to act on her interest in politics by becoming the first woman elected to the Wytheville Town Council, where she served until 1982. She also served on the Wythe County Board of Supervisors from 1999 through 2005, and was its chair in 2003. The Honorable Anne B. Crockett-Stark was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates as a representative for the 6th District in Southwest Virginia from 2006 to 2014. In this capacity, she was a strong advocate for state support for Virginia’s Community Colleges in general and for WCC in particular. She always welcomed WCC students when they visited the General Assembly and did an extraordinary job of explaining legislative processes to them. The Honorable Anne B. Crockett-Stark regularly attends WCC activities and events and has demonstrated support for the college financially through the WCC Educational Foundation. As a member of the Links Club, she helped lead efforts for that organization to establish a scholarship endowment through the Foundation to benefit WCC students. An advocate of higher education, Crockett-Stark continues to encourage students to attend WCC and pursue their educational goals.
Mr. Arthur Davis Professor Emeritus
Mr. Arthur “Art” Davis has been selected as Professor Emeritus of Wytheville Community College for 2024. This honor may be bestowed on retired WCC faculty members who held faculty rank, had a minimum of ten years of service, and made meritorious and significant contributions to the college. Mr. Davis earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Adams State College of Colorado in 1974. He later earned a Master’s Degree in 1975, also from Adams State College of Colorado. Additionally, Mr. Davis served as a member of the United States Army for over thirty-eight years and earned several medals during his service. He retired from service in 2008 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Davis was a member of the WCC family for more than three decades. His career as a WCC faculty member spanned from September of 1981 until his retirement in June of 2002. He was the recipient of the Improvement of Instruction Award in 2002. During Mr. Davis’ tenure at WCC, he demonstrated a passion for the Business Management program. He served as the faculty advisor for the program, frequently traveling to area schools to promote it. Mr. Davis was also the sponsor for the Phi Beta Lambda chapter at WCC, and it grew to be biggest chapter in the state of Virginia. Perhaps most notably, he enlisted his students in area fundraising projects as a component of his marketing classes to teach them key business principles while also aiding the local community. Many examples of their notable fundraising exist, but perhaps most impressive is Mr. Davis’ investment in the planning of the athletic fields on campus. While he was serving in active military duty, Mr. Davis was instrumental in commissioning the design and construction of the Al Jennings Athletic Fields by the United States Army’s 760th Engineering Company. After his students raised funds for a new redwood sign, Mr. Davis hauled stone to campus and he and his brother donated their time to build the base for the sign as it stands today. His Business Seminar class also conducted studies demonstrating the need for a childcare center in the area, which aided Dr. Snyder in getting a childcare center added to the Wytheville Wellness Center. The college is pleased to honor Mr. Art Davis for his years of dedicated service to the students, faculty, and staff of WCC. Mr. Davis also helped establish the “Jennings Family Scholarship Fund” that honors Al Jennings and his family for their contributions to WCC and the community.
Mrs. Anna Ray Roberts Administrative Professional Faculty Emeritus
Anna Ray Roberts has been selected as the Administrative/Professional Faculty Emeritus of Wytheville Community College for 2024. This honor may be bestowed on retired WCC administrative/professional faculty members who had a minimum of ten years of service, and made meritorious and significant contributions to the college. Mrs. Roberts earned a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Michigan in 1964, and a Master’s Degree, also from The University of Michigan in 1965. Mrs. Roberts served the college faithfully from January 1, 1967, beginning as the Library Director until her retirement on August 1, 2008, as Library Coordinator. Her dedication to student learning in a library setting led the college to honor her with the Improvement of Instruction Award in 1985. During the 41 years Mrs. Roberts served WCC, she supervised the move of the Library three times and managed it in four locations, the Simmerman Building, Fincastle Hall, Bland Hall, and Smyth Hall. She demonstrated excellent management of the college’s library by participating in marketing and fundraising efforts throughout her time at the college. Her expertise led to the successful funding of the Kegley Library, and she provided leadership in numerous special events, including the dedication of Smyth Hall and the Kegley Library. She was instrumental in implementing a Virtual Library of Virginia System for WCC. Mrs. Roberts also served as the college’s liaison with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and guided the college community through the reaccreditation process and helped the college secure its successful reaccreditation during one of its accreditation cycles.
The college is pleased to honor Anna Ray Roberts for her years of dedicated service to the students, faculty, and staff of WCC.
Mrs. Linda Nye Support Staff Emeritus
Mrs. Linda Nye has been selected Support Staff Emeritus of Wytheville Community College for 2024. This recognition honors retired support staff personnel who served WCC for a minimum of ten years and whose performance and contributions were meritorious. A graduate of Wytheville Community College, Mrs. Nye earned an Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Science in 1971. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Radford University in 1990. Mrs. Nye was a dedicated WCC employee and a devoted member of the WCC support staff from September 16, 1972 until her retirement July 1, 2015.
