Wytheville Community College 2025 Commencement Program

The Annual Commencement of Wytheville Community College

Saturday, May 10, 2025

Wytheville Community College provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment, educational opportunities and activities to all students, and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, political affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or other non-merit factors. The following person has been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies: Malinda Eversole, Director of Human Resources, 105 Carroll Hall, 1000 East Main Street, Wytheville VA 24382, 276-223-4869. For further information, see the list of OCR enforcement offices for the address and phone number of the office that serves your area, or call 1-800-421-3481.

History of Wytheville Community College The doors of Wytheville Community College opened in September 1963 as a two-year branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Classes for the 107 students, who were taught by five faculty members, were held in the Simmerman Building in Wytheville. Construction of the present campus complex began in 1966 on 103 acres that had been purchased the previous year. The first building, Fincastle Hall, was occupied in 1968. WCC became a part of the twenty-three-member Virginia Community College System on July 1, 1967, with a service region of Bland, Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe counties; the city of Galax; and the eastern portion of Smyth County. The college serves more than 2,700 students annually through credit courses. Over 100 full- and part-time faculty teach at the college. With this year’s total included, over 13,000 students have graduated since the first commencement in 1968, and thousands of area citizens have been served through non-credit courses, seminars, and workshops. In 1981, a significant milestone was reached with the establishment of the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., and in 1998 the WCC Scholarship Foundation was also established. In 2024, the WCC Real Estate Foundation was formed. Contributions to these non-profit organizations provide for scholarships and enhance educational programs and facilities at the college. The Tradition of Caps and Gowns American academic costumes originated during the Middle Ages in European universities. Students and teachers were set apart from other citizens by the gowns and hoods which were practical attire in cold, damp buildings. The basic parts of the costume vary by academic level. The ornamental fold of cloth worn around the neck, the hood, is the most distinctive feature of the costume. The colors of its velvet band and lining are representative of the wearer’s field of learning.

HONORS Students whose academic performances warrant special recognition graduate with Honors. The three levels of academic honors are as follows:

CUM LAUDE (3.2 to 3.49 Grade Point Average) MAGNA CUM LAUDE (3.5 to 3.79 Grade Point Average) SUMMA CUM LAUDE (3.8 to 4.0 Grade Point Average)

Students wearing the following honor cord colors will be signified for the appropriate honor: Cum Laude - White Magna Cum Laude - Burgundy Summa Cum Laude - Gold Graduates wearing gold stoles are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the national scholastic honor society for students enrolled at two-year colleges. Apricot cords denote Nursing Honors. Graduates who are veterans or active military. * These graduates have completed their college degree and/or certificate concurrently with the high school diploma. All persons listed herein completed their curriculum requirements during fall semester 2024 or are candidates for spring semester 2025 or summer term 2025. The order of degree presentation and the listing in the program may not coincide because students receiving more than one award select the curriculum for which they are recognized. The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, with its medieval origin, symbolizes the academic authority of the faculty. It is used for ceremonial occasions such as commencement exercises and presidential inaugurations. The Professor Emeritus will lead the faculty procession and carry the ceremonial mace. The mace was designed and machined by Don Alexander, retired Associate Professor of Machine Technology, in the college's Machine Technology Laboratory.

Mrs. Donna Fender Professor Emeritus

Mrs. Donna Fender has been selected as Professor Emeritus of Wytheville Community College for 2025. This honor may be bestowed on retired WCC faculty members who held faculty rank, had a minimum of ten years of service, and made meritorious and significant contributions to the college. Mrs. Fender earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Wytheville Community College in 1980, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Radford University in 1982, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Radford University in 1987. Mrs. Fender devoted 15 years of exemplary service to Wytheville Community College (WCC), which included 12 years as a faculty member and 3 ½ years as an administrator. She taught Administrative Support Technology from 1999 to 2011. As an associate professor and Program Head of Administrative Support Technology, Mrs. Fender worked diligently to provide relevant instruction to prepare students for their career path. She encouraged and mentored students in and out of the classroom and also served as club co-sponsor for WCC’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter where many WCC students earned state and national recognition for their business skills. Mrs. Fender served as the Interim Dean of General Education and Business during 2011-2012, and became the Dean of Transfer, Business, and Social Sciences in 2012, until her retirement in 2015. Her leadership and commitment were instrumental in fostering a positive and collaborative work environment, advancing college initiatives, and delivering exceptional support to administration, faculty, staff, and students. Donna consistently demonstrated professionalism and accuracy in her division, providing academic leadership in program planning, overseeing accreditation requirements, and creating articulation opportunities. Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Fender championed WCC’s culture of excellence and quality service, promoting teamwork, respectful communication, and professional development. WCC proudly honors Mrs. Donna Fender for her dedication, leadership, and invaluable contributions to the college community.

Dr. Oliver McBride Honorary Degree

At this year’s commencement, the college is pleased to present an Honorary Associate Degree in Humane Letters to Dr. Oliver McBride.

Dr. McBride has a long-standing commitment to the success of Wytheville Community College (WCC). He served as Superintendent of Carroll County Public Schools from 1989 to 2007, during which he expanded dual enrollment opportunities, increasing available courses and credentialed faculty. He played a key role in founding the Crossroads Rural Entrepreneurial Institute in Galax, establishing a 501(c)(3) organization to repurpose a former Lowe’s building into a facility for small business incubation and an off-site location for WCC. After retiring from Carroll County Public Schools, he became Executive Director of the Crossroads Institute from 2007–2015. While in that role, Dr. McBride encouraged the community’s use of the Crossroads Institute and their participation in programs WCC offered at that location. Dr. McBride also launched the Twin County Leadership Initiative, providing WCC students opportunities for career exploration and leadership development alongside local professionals. Appointed to the WCC Board in 2015, he served on various committees and was Vice Chair from 2022–2023. Through his work with the Fuller Center for Housing - Greater Carroll County Area, a collaboration was fostered with WCC’s Construction Technology Programs, to provide students with hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, Dr. McBride supported cultural arts as a member of the WCC Choir and a generous advocate of the WCC Educational Foundation. Dr. McBride remains deeply committed to his community and to fostering higher education opportunities. As a steadfast advocate for lifelong learning, he actively promotes the value of attending WCC and pursuing academic and career aspirations. Dr. McBride’s dedication is evident in his ongoing efforts to champion college initiatives and support educational programs that empower individuals to achieve their goals. Through his unwavering support, Dr. McBride continues to inspire students to recognize the transformative impact of education and take steps toward building brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.
