at the Ambulance and Basic levels, including not just fire and rescue personnel but regular citizens who enrolled in the college-delivered courses. Tom instructed me as a part of a class he taught at the NVCC and I can vouch for his passion in teaching and more importantly, his desire to assure that his students succeeded in developing their skills – not just passing a test. His instruction and mentoring helped me launch a successful role as a Basic Life Support Aide for over 35 years in the fire service in Virginia, and I will always remember him for his caring and guidance. Attended an awards ceremony for call takers and dispatchers employed by the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications. The ceremony was their capstone event for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and was held at the Elaine McConnell Public Safety Transportation and Operations Center, in Fairfax, Virginia. Keynote remarks delivered by Fairfax County Fire Chief John Butler emphasized the important role that public safety telecommunicators play in the success of every fire service response, and in protecting the lives, property, and environment of the community they serve.

Attended the viewing of the late Charlie King of the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. King was a Life Member and had served as an Assistant Fire Chief at Centreville during his active service. He was 74 years old at the time of his passing. AFC King was the son of Centreville founding member Gilbert King, and brother of deceased Life Member Toby King. His wife Diane was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Centreville VFD for many years. Charlie was a veteran of the United States Navy. Following his naval service, he served with Fairfax County Public Schools for 30 years before retiring to the Shenandoah Valley. AFC King was a Master Mason and received a Mason’s service at the viewing. He was a 32 nd Degree Mason at the time he passed away. AFC King was still attending the annual awards dinner for the Centreville VFD until his health prevented him from traveling.

Delivered a fire prevention presentation to Dulles area members of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees at their meeting in Herndon, Virginia. The group was quite engaged, and the presentation evolved into a discussion rather than a formal briefing. Attended the 86 th Annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Firefighters Parade in Winchester, Virginia. Networked with members and fire service equipment providers, and discussed recruitment with prospective members.
