mixture was called puddin’ meat. In the coldest of winter months, Mom opened a can of
puddin’, fried it with onions, and served it with pin to beans.

During the winter of 1962, we had a snowstorm that set records for the century.
It snowed nonstop for two days leaving a total of forty-two inches. As is typical after a
strong nor’easter, the wind blew for two more days.
We had drifts of thirteen feet that started at the front porch and covered the road
and the fences. No one left our house except on foot atop the drifts for seven days.
Mom was so proud. All she had to do to feed us was go into the cellar and get canned
