Savor the Flavor
Italian Stromboli
Ingredients: 1 loaf frozen bread dough
6 slices deli ham, or more as desired 20 slices pepperoni, or more as desired
1/2 medium green bell pepper, sliced julienne style 1/2 cup small, sweet onion, sliced julienne style 1/4-1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 2 tbsps. Water ot Milk) Olive oil
Italian Seasoning, to taste Salt and pepper, to taste Marinara Sauce
Instructions: Thaw bread dough until it is room temperature and raised slightly. Lightly flour counter and roll or press dough into a rectangle roughly 7X20 inches. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Layer down center of dough lengthwise: ham, pepperoni, pepper, onion and cheese. Brush edges of dough with egg wash. Stretch one side over ingredients and press as you go to seal, leaving about ¼ inch edge. Repeat with opposite edge but bring dough around to back and seal. Fold ends under to backside and seal. Flip seam side down onto cookie sheet. Poke 2-3 holes in top. Bake until golden brown. An oozing can be poked back in with a knife. It will seal when cooling. When done, brush top with olive oil, sprinkle with Italian seasonings, salt and pepper. As a former owner of an Italian restaurant several years ago, I adapted a home version of this customer favorite. I discovered that frozen bread dough makes a good substitute for pizza dough, not to mention it’s a huge time saver. I make them up and freeze them to take to the beach or give away as Christmas presents. I’ve even sold them as a fundraiser. Great sliced thin and served as an appetizer! (Serves 6 people)
