Broadening Diverse Perspectives

3: Gender Study

The student will be able to use research skills to answer questions about bias in the media.

The teacher will begin by asking students to read their “I wonder” questions if they feel comfortable. This should begin a discussion about gender in the novel. Students will be encouraged to talk about how they feel their gender was represented in the novel. This discussion should help students begin to think about how they feel about gender equality in books. The teacher will guide students and show them how to ask questions in order for the students to form their own opinions. Students will be encouraged to analyze The Lightning Thief and ask questions about the role gender plays. The teacher will then present the project. Students will be given a research guide. The guides should be completed in class, but can be homework if needed. Students will examine past books, TV shows, and movies to see how each gender is represented. Students may begin to see the inequalities of male vs. female presence in the media they analyze as well as in T he Lightning Thief . Prior to the lesson, students will have read The Lightning Thief and have a clear understanding of Percy Jackson and Greek methodology. The teacher may have to share some information about the Greek gods. Students will be introduced to the assignment. Students will be asked to create a Fakebook page for their demigod. The following should be included: • Diverse elements • Picture • Clear evidence of research • Greek name • Super powers • Interest • Creative elements

Students will be asked to write, “I wonder” questions for homework the night before this lesson begins. Students will be asked to think about the role women and men play in The Lightning Thief . The research guide will be used as an assessment during the lesson. Students will complete this guide during class with help from the teacher. In order to complete this guide successfully the students need to analyze and summarize their findings. This guide will also help the teacher determine if the students comprehended the book. Create a diverse demi-god Fakebook page!

4: Connecting to the Text

The student will be able to use their prior knowledge about diversity to create a “demigod fakebook* page” that represents themselves and their diverse qualities.

Note. Fakebook is an online classroom tool where students can create a page, similar to Facebook, for an imaginary character. https://www.classtools.net/FB/home-page
