Table 2: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Lessons Lesson # and Title Learning Goals Overview
Assessment
1: Writing Workshop
The student will be able to use knowledge and opinions about
Begin this lesson by asking students to think about Percy’s character traits. Percy is an underdog and cast aside by society. Highlight this idea in a discussion. Introduce the assignment. Explain that the students will rotate through writing stations to complete a short story. Students will be asked to brainstorm Percy’s character traits using a bubble map in the first station, create a rough draft in the second station, and then revise and finalize in the third station. This method will allow the teacher to have one-on-one instruction with the students in the rough draft and/or revision station. The students will write about who they think Percy Jackson would be today. They can choose themselves, family members, celebrities, etc. After introducing the assignment, the teacher will model how to brainstorm. It would be ideal to have models of brainstorm methods (bubble maps, outlines, etc.) displayed. Students will rotate through each station. Before moving on to the next station students must first get approval from the teacher. The teacher will begin the lesson by having students define “diversity.” Students should write down their responses and then share in small groups. We will then analyze the diverse elements of the book and discuss how to write a book review. Students will be encouraged to take notes. Students will answer review questions. Students can then begin working on their own book review. Teacher can rotate around the classroom to monitor students’ work.
The writing will be used as an assessment. Teacher can check for comprehension, grammar, and organization.
