WELCOME TO OUR TOWN Mount Airy, North Carolina
REASONS TO LOVE OUR COMMUNITY Mount Airy is located in a most desirable location in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Mount Airy was founded in 1885. It grew from a stagecoach stop for travelers crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains from Salem (now Winston-Salem) to Wytheville, Virginia. In the 1700s and 1800s, it was known as “The Hollows” because of its nestled location beneath the mountains. The area locally known as “Flat Rock,” just east of downtown, was developed into the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world and has provided Mount Airy with its popular nickname, “The Granite City”.
As a Main Street America Accredited Program, Mount AiryDowntown, Inc. is a part of a national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. World’s Largest Open-Faced Granite Quarry
Mount Airy, nicknamed “The Granite City”, is home to the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world. Many of Mount Airy’s homes, churches and businesses are made from Mount Airy granite. The Wright Brother’s Memorial in Kitty Hawk was made from Mount Airy granite. Shaped like an enormous oyster shell, the quarry covers approximately 90 acres, which is currently under operation. The deposit is about 1 mile long and 1/3 mile wide. Geological mapping shows the total mass to be about 7 miles by 4 miles and 6,000 to 8,000 feet deep. Since 1889, the quarry has been in full operation and the surface has only just been scratched according to depth tests. Geologists say the deposit can be quarried for approximately 500 more years without exhausting the supply.
