It grew from a stagecoach stop for travelers crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains from Salem (now Winston-Salem) to Wytheville, Virginia. In the 1700s and 1800s, it was known as “The Hollows” because of its nestled location beneath the mountains. The area locally known as “Flat Rock,” just east of downtown, was developed into the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world and has provided Mount Airy with its popular nickname, “The Granite City”.

The hometown of Andy Griffith, Mount Airy retains its inviting, small town atmosphere while offering downtown shopping and museums to explore. Yearly festivals include Mayberry Days, Autumn Leaves Festival, Bluegrass and Fiddler’s Convention and more. Enjoy many upcoming concerts from artists like “The Embers”, “Fantasy Band”, “The Holiday Band” and more at the Blackmon Amphitheatre this summer.
