Marie Texie Miller

Marie Texie Miller was born to John Harvey and Minnie Catherine on July 23, 1904. Mar ie’s daughter, Joan Armstrong Erstine , provided the following information to me in 1996. Marie furthered her education like her older sister Stella. Joan thought that her mother attended Radford College but it may have been possible she began her college education at Marion College in Marion, Virginia then completed her training at Radford. Little is remembered about her childhood years.

After completing two years of teaching instruction she was granted a teaching certificate and returned to Kimberling where she taught in a one-room schoolhouse at DeHart. This was located near the eastern end of Kimberling Valley on Route 612 . The structure was later converted to Shady Grove Methodist Church, which still has an active congregation. Her father, John Harvey, provided her with transportation on a horse named Frank. Soon, she decided to further her education since teaching provided such a limited income. She went to Bluefield and enrolled in a business course. Once the course was completed better economic opportunities lured her to Detroit, Michigan traveling there by train. There she lived with her sister Stella and was employed by the Bell Telephone Company. She remained with this company until she met and married LeRoy Armstrong on January 28, 1928 when she was 24 years old. Marie and LeRoy had two children: Joan and Rodney F.
