Return to the Land

then for Jefferson Standard Insurance Company. It was with this company that I bought my first life insurance policy from Uncle Carl. He worked in a semi-retired capacity until he finally retired. Sorrow again found its way to Carl’s family when in 1959 Estelle was diagnosed as having a mass in her abdomen. She underwent surgery and it was discovered this was a benign tumor. But fate played its hand harshly and postoperatively she suffered an acute myocardial infarction from which she did not recover. According to Richard, she may have known of the existing heart condition but elected not to inform her family or the surgeon preoperatively. Carl was still relatively young to spend the remainder of his life alone. In time he remarried a friend of the family, Edna B. Copenhaver Cline. He sold the home on Rockbridge Street and bought a smaller home on Cumberland Road where they lived the remainder of their lives. Edna B. preceded Carl in death. On May 28, 1980 while traveling on the West Virginia Turnpike Carl was killed in an auto accident. Carl and Estelle are buried in the Monte-Vista Cemetery just east of Bluefield.
