18. Guiding Lights

Scripture: Psalm 34

Hymn:

"Jesus, Savior Pilot Me"

Meditation: Look to the guiding lights of God for a peaceful journey over life’s tempestuous sea. The theme of hope for the human state ripples through Scripture with solid foundations in the many assurances of God’s character, presence, and provision in the following areas:  The Light of God’s GOODNESS. (Psalm 34:1 -7) Notice how this Psalm begins with a personal statement of praise as well as an invitation for others to rejoice in the Lord’s loving goodness toward humanity. God’s love gives, expecting nothing in return — a love all should seek to demonstrate — a love worthy of praise.  The Light of God’s MERCY. (Psalm 34:8-14) Understanding God’s compassion on human need helps believers to endure the struggles. However, the light of mercy also warns of consequences for sin, just as a lighthouse on the shore warns of danger.  The Light of God’s GRACE. (Psalm 34:15-22) God’s favor , the literal translation for grace, comes only with the price of redemption. The last verse in this chapter reminds all who hope for the guiding lights of goodness and mercy through life that they come only with the price of Jesus’ payment for sin. Only those who “take refuge” in that redemptive plan by faith in Christ also have access to the lights of hope. Chart and compass came from Thee: Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
