9. Lessons from the Lily The word lily in the Hebrew derives its name from another word that means "to be bright, cheerful, to make joyful." Solomon stated (S.S.2:1) "I am the lily of the valleys." Some valleys are dry, some cold, some dark, some with plush greenery growing in them, some barren and some rocky. Jesus is the lily in our valleys-- referring to "an experience that challenges our faith. You may be in the valley of decision! You may need direction and guidance. “ Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; … and he shall direct thy paths. ” (Prov. 3:5-6) You may be in the valley of depression! Your depression may be caused by health problems, emotional problems, circumstances that are beyond your control or prolonged stress. “ LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! …But thou, O LORD, art… the lifter up of mine head. ” (Psalms 3:1-3) You may be in the valley of fear! You are filled with fear due to circumstances that you are facing. Jesus said, ” I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. ” (Hebrews 13:5) You may be in the valley of frustration! You are prevented from accomplishing a purpose or fulfilling a desire. “ Peace I leave with you…. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. ” (John 14:27) You may be in the valley of shame! You've failed. Sin may have stained your life. Luke 4:18 reads that “ Jesus was anointed to set at liberty them that are bruised. ” You may be in the valley of worry! The word "worry" means to "tear apart or to divide. “ Casting all your care upon Him; for he careth for you . ” (1 Peter 5:7) You may be in the valley of sin! Proverbs 5:22 describes such a difficult valley; ” His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins .” Jesus Himself stated in John 8:36, “ If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. ”
