Portraits with Purpose

8. Last Mile of the Way

Scripture: 2 nd Samuel 19:31-39

Hymns:

"Make Me A Blessing"

Meditation: Barzillai, at 80 years of age, had volunteered every service and sense at his disposal until he finally recommended to his king, David, that a younger more able servant go forward in service as a replacement. David protested, but eventually blessed Barzillai for his sincere devotion and accepted his good wishes. Is your service one that God can bless?  Constant Companionship David’s faithful servants decreased as danger increased, yet this one stayed and extended his service beyond his own ability by recommending his own replacement. A true companion desires the good of the other over the good of self.  Sharing Servant All of the services that this companion could no longer offer exhibited a life of sharing in pleasures as well as potential dangers. Many could learn from this list of sharing to lighten the stressful load of life for a friend.  Honest Humility Both men knew the weakness of the aging servant, yet humility allowed both to step forward in life without disgrace. Pretending from any perspective benefits no one, but honesty always brings the best possibilities to light.  Faithful Foresight If everyone walked forward with some foresight, the results for time and eternity would be glorious. Looking ahead gives a foundation to planning today.
