Meet Logan - Our Partner Since 2005
“When we got the diagnosis at UVA, Logan was 13 months old.”
“We were told, ‘Your son has autism. He probably will never talk, run, or be able to interact with society.’ This was 19 years ago. They didn’t know what they know now about autism. We were devastated. It was a very long hall we walked down after that diagnosis. I decided to try everything I could to bring Logan out of his isolated world. We immediately started early intervention. The only time we saw Logan give eye contact was with dogs. I approached Saint Francis Service Dogs at a conference I was attending and asked if they could train a dog to help with autism.
Logan and Rock
They said ‘absolutely.’”

A YEAR in review
I walked into my office at Saint Francis the other morning with my head down and shoulders
Sophia and Daniel Yes, there are always problems that need solving, resources that need finding, and troubles that need easing. But the mother that dropped by my office reminded me of the slow, steady current that runs below all that noise of immediate needs. The current of gentleness, kindness, and nurturing that leads Saint Francis Service Dogs to become catalysts of amazing change in the lives of the people and families they serve.
I am extremely proud of our Saint Francis staff, volunteers and donors for making 2019 a year full of great accomplish- ments! This year we welcomed twenty-five wiggly little puppies into our newly redesigned and improved Puppy Raiser Program. We recruited dozens of new volunteers to help with all aspects of our operations, from raising puppies to helping us keep our property clean and well-maintained. We strengthened our kennel
tight. I had a lot on my mind – problems needed solving, resources needed
finding, and troubles needed easing. Frankly, I was stressed.
Soon after I settled into my seat, the mother of one of our partners walked into my office and asked for a moment of my time. Of
course, I said yes. She sat and talked to me for a little while about the ways her son’s service dog changed his life and the life of her family. She told me stories. She explained how deeply grateful she was and would always be for what we’ve done and continue to do for her son. When she left my office, I sat quietly for a moment and then I looked around. Outside the window, I saw volunteers walking dogs with wagging tails. I heard trainers in the next room talking about dogs and how to best teach each one. And I felt calm.
She reminded me that what we really produce at Saint Francis is hope and love, which we deliver in the form of highly-trained, devoted, joyful service dogs. I encourage you to attend our Graduation on May 3 rd to see for yourself. It defies metrics. We could never do what we do without the unflagging support of our donors and volunteers. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity of spirit. You inspire us every day.
enrichment program, decreased our career change rate, and dramatically increased the number of graduating teams. We are always measuring our progress towards carefully charted goals. These metrics are important because we need them to make sure we stay on track. We are keenly aware of our responsibility to you - our donors, volunteers and partners - to be sure that our programs are strong and well-run so that we continue to deserve your trust.

our friend Logan continued from cover
Autism Spectrum Disorder refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, communication, and sensory sensitivities. ASD is different for everyone. For Logan, it means all his senses are heightened. Hearing the buzzing in the lights, every conversation around him, bright lights become blinding; that is Logan’s world every day. When our Saint Francis team first met Logan and his parents, Erin and Wayne, Logan was two years old and non-verbal. It was clear that Erin and Wayne would move heaven and earth for their son, and they were just the kind of team that could benefit from partnership with a service dog. Service dogs learn over 40 skills and tasks to help people with physical and developmental disabilities.
Logan and Trooper
For people with autism, they can also provide a helpful focus to redirect attention from overstimulation, can go for help when necessary, and can perform a task called “pressuring,” where they apply their weight onto the legs or chest of their partners to help calm them down. Logan was matched with a two-year old golden retriever named Trooper. Erin credits the incorporation of Trooper into Logan’s speech and occupational therapy with his communication breakthroughs. Logan also developed abdominal epileptic seizures, which caused him to shut down. He stopped talking, eating, and drinking. Erin says that working with Trooper is what brought her son back. When Logan turned 10, it came time for Trooper to retire and live out his golden years as a beloved pet. Logan, however, was not retiring. Ace was Logan’s second Saint Francis Service Dog. Ace attended school with Logan every day and helped him function during the school day and in public places. While we are not able to train dogs for seizure alert, many take to it naturally, and Ace was able to alert Logan’s parents and school staff before he was about to have a seizure. Ace was with Logan for every dentist and doctor visit, and every surgery. With Ace by his side, Logan graduated from high school on time with the rest of his class.

our friend Logan continued
Not only is Logan one of our partners, but in recent years he and Erin have also become two of our most active volunteers. They come and walk our dogs every week. Erin said, “Logan loves to talk to the dogs and tell them how they will help someone like him.” At their weekly dog walking outing is where they first met Rock. Having worked and played long and hard for the last eight years, Ace is now retired to focus more on the playing and less on the working. Rock is joining the team to ensure that Logan can maintain his independence and continue to tackle the world head-on, especially as a freshman in college this year! Logan and Rock recently completed team training and Erin recounted a story about the moment that she knew Rock was the perfect match: “We had only been matched for a week… Logan became very overwhelmed. He began crying and stimming and truly could not calm down.
“Our son has so much to offer this world.”
Logan and Ace
Logan’s mom went on to say, “I will never forget the feeling after we got his diagnosis and being told all the things he wouldn’t be able to do, and look at him now with his dog by his side. Our son has so much to offer this world.” We are privileged to know Logan and his family. Watching his journey with his three Saint Francis Service Dogs an affirmation of why we do what we do.
Logan and Rock
Rock knew exactly what to do. He put his paw on Logan and pulled him towards him, pressed against Logan’s side and put his head on his chest. It brought tears to my eyes. We so look forward to many adventures in the future with our beautiful Rock.”

and Soda Pop By working together, our organizations can train and place more assistance dogs with those who need them. We can’t wait to watch these puppies learn and grow into service dogs-in-training.
We work with a number of other programs and nonprofits to provide physically healthy, temperamentally steady puppies to train for service work. As part of the Assistance Dogs International Breeding Coopera- tive, Taco, Oliver, Gertti and Marcia arrived earlier this year all the way from Southeastern Guide Dogs in Florida. Cobe and Soda Pop came to us from Project2Heal in North Carolina.
Saint Francis Service Dogs is a member of the ADI Breeding Cooperative — a partnership with other accredited assistance dog programs, in which puppies are bred specifically for service dog work. This collaborative ADI membership program collectively improves member access to acceptional puppies by combining resources to realize the benefits of a large, expertly managed, assistance dog breeding program. Daniel says I am well on my way!
“Daniel and I had company! Her name is Aurie and we look a lot alike, but she is older than me and she is so smart! She is almost a full-fledged Saint Francis Service Dog. Aurie was puppy raised here at Bland, just like me, and she came back for a visit before she moves in with her partner. We had SO much fun playing! I want to be just like her when I grow up... Daniel says I will be!”
Sophia Pup In Training
“Sophia and her puppy raiser, Daniel, had a visitor for a few weeks. Aurie, who was puppy raised at Bland Correctional Center recently went back for a visit. Aurie is a year older became quick friends. When Sophia was told by Daniel to take Aurie to her room, Sophia obliged by picking up Aurie’s leash and walking her to the room. Aurie, remembering where the dayroom was located and that it was a fun place for play, on request by Daniel, took Sophia by the collar and led her to the room. The visit was fun for both girls and a reminder of how the training our dogs receive can go in more directions than we ever imagine.” Marilyn Wilson Puppy Program Manager (and wiser) than puppy Sophia, but the two girls
“Sophia is working on her Intermediate level of puppy training and preparing herself for advanced training. She’s a fun girl, sometimes with a mind of her own but always willing and ready for the next thing coming her way. When she gets a case of the zoomies , she lowers her body , looking like a Volkswagon Beetle, and takes off.”

Donor SPOTLIGHT
We recently had the chance to chat with him about his involve- ment with Saint Francis, and with over 20 years of experience to draw on, it was a privilege to hear what he had to say. “As the Veterinary Advisor, my main interest in the organization is in helping to ensure that our puppies and adult dogs in the program are structurally sound and remain healthy. I am also very interested in the actual training process. I am amazed at the skills our trainers possess. To be able to turn a rowdy, 8-week-old Labrador or Golden Retriever into a calm, well-mannered, obedient service dog that knows 30-40 commands in two years—that is very impressive to me! The difference these dogs go on to make in the lives of their partners is truly amazing and very heart warming. Each recipient has a different story, but the common theme is that our service dogs allow them to enjoy a greater level of independence, day-in and day-out. It makes me proud to know that we are widely respected in the service dog world. Other organizations have visited our facility and met with our trainers to see how we do it. I tip my hat to our Executive Director, Cabell Youell, who has guided us to achieve the high standards we have. As part of Saint Francis, I get to meet and work with some amazing people – our board members, trainers, our admin staff, our partners, the numerous
veterinarians in this area that help take care of our puppies and dogs, our many volunteers. Plus, I’ve been able to meet a lot of cool dogs! As a member of the Board of Directors, I also see the business side. We’ve run the numbers – it takes tens of thousands of dollars to produce one service dog. We then turn around and give this dog away for free! This is a rather unusual business model, to say the least. We rely solely on donations, grants, and an occasional bequest. So, I continue to donate money personally, as well as through Roanoke Animal Hospital. My parents and my Catholic upbringing taught me to help others. Children and adults with disabilities face daily challenges that I’ve never had to deal with. There is a genuine need to help make these challenges less daunting. Pairing this need to help others with my natural affection for animals leads me to my commitment to help this organization.” When asked how he would describe his personal mission, Dr. Finkler said, “To make a difference in the world, even if it’s only a small one. I’mmore of a ‘small picture’ guy; I’ll never be able to end world hunger or bring peace in this world, but I can still make a difference. Life is finite – we’re here for only a limited time. I believe that I have an obligation to leave this world a better place than the way I found it.” Saint Francis is certainly better for having Dr. Finkler’s dedication and support.
Dr. Mark Finkler has been a veterinarian for over 40 years. He is the owner of Roanoke Animal Hospital, a member of many local, state, and national veterinary organizations, and teaches part-time at the VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. He is also the Veterinary Advisor at Saint Francis and a charter member of our Board of Directors. In fact, he was on the team that developed the original business model for Saint Francis. He has been contributing to our mission since day one. As a veterinarian and animal lover, it will not surprise you to learn that Dr. Finkler is keenly aware of the special relationships that exist between animals and their humans. Having been a part of our organization since the beginning, he has seen how meaningful and transformative these relationships can be for service dogs and their partners in particular. Not only has he supported our mission on a selfless and personal level, but through his business, he offers in-kind support for the medical care of our animals, and Roanoke Animal Hospital is a frequent graduation and event sponsor.

Behind THE SCENES
Training for Distractions
Our dogs spend around two years mastering all of the skills necessary to help their future partner. One of the biggest challenges for any service dog is dealing with distractions in public. We typically work with a “Leave It” command or a technique of applying gentle pressure on the collar to redirect a dog’s focus. While generally effective, these methods put all of the responsibility on the partner, and for some of our partners, quick verbalization or physical correction can be challenging. A trainer from a guide dog school recently visited our facility for a tour, and she and our Staff Trainer, Debbie were discussing different training techniques. Debbie asked about how their dogs are trained to deal with distractions on their own, as their partners cannot see the
distractions to give the commands themselves. The end result of this discussion has allowed Debbie to incorporate a new training technique that puts the onus of dealing with distractions back on our dogs. This new distraction, but then they must check back in with their partner within three seconds. This is taught through a lot of practice which involves our staff members trying to be as distracting as possible . (8232 Enon is a fun place to work!) The process is repetitive, and the dogs are learning quickly. The end result will give our partners just a few extra moments to keep or regain control in a variety of situations. method allows the dogs to notice and look at the

Volunteer SPOTLIGHT
Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. They give of their time, talents, and means to help people they don’t know live richer, fuller lives with the help and support of a Saint Francis Service Dog. Krista Sinnott has been helping our partners through her volunteer work for 15 years! When she first started volunteering, she was most excited to work with the puppies…and work with the puppies she has! Krista has been both a puppy raiser and a puppy sitter for us and many of her charges have gone on to be successful Saint Francis Service Dogs. With so much experience with our puppies and training process, she is one of our go-to volunteers for helping us with puppies that need a bit of extra attention in certain areas. She welcomes puppies into her home for a few weeks at a time to work with them on confidence building or behavioral challenges. When asked which achievement she was most proud of, she said that it was helping puppies over- come these challenges that might have otherwise prevented them frommoving forward and becoming service dogs.
With the help of her husband, Mike, her own pet dogs, Saint and Doc (who happen to be fabulous Saint Francis Career Change Dogs), and even the help of her co-workers, who graciously welcome our Saint Francis puppies into their office space when Krista is working with them, she helps change the lives of our partners, who will one day be matched with her charges. She says: “Every single one of the dogs I’ve spent time with has made a lasting impression on me, and I have felt a bond and attachment with each one. What moves me most is seeing them at graduation or other events or hearing about what they are doing with their partners, seeing the connection they have with their partners. The partnership between a service dog and their person is life-changing for the partner and their family, friends and support system. I so value my own independence and the love of my own dogs, and to be able to have a small role in helping provide that to someone else is a real privilege.” As if Krista’s steadfast and selfless support in all the ways she already gives of her time and energy to our mission weren’t enough, she is now also the newest member of our Board of Directors. Trust us when we say, the privilege is ours, Krista!

Facility Partner SPOTLIGHT!
Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital helps some 700 patients a year in their recovery from stroke, brain injury, orthopedic trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation and many other conditions. We have a special relationship with Riverside. In 2011, our very first facility dog, Ekko was placed there. From this partnership, not only did Ekko assist in the therapies of over 4,000 patients, but it opened a door for us at Saint Francis to see how a

Thanks to a generous grant from Newport News Shipbuilding’s Corporate Citizenship program, our partnership with Riverside will continue. This grant has allowed us to train and place a new facility dog at Riverside named Ada. Gary Artybridge, manager of community relations for Newport News Shipbuilding said, “This grant will help make life-changing impacts on local residents facing severe health challenges.”
working dog could be incorpo- rated into the life of a variety of facilities. We have since placed five more facility dogs, who have impacted the lives of thousands of individuals.
Thanks to this support, Ada and her handler Wendy, along with a team of therapists are in the process of in-facility training. Once certified, Ada will assist in individual and group therapy, participate in speech therapy by allowing patients to verbalize commands, and help in physical therapy, where patients will re-gain strength and coordination through play and task work. We are so excited to see Ekko’s legacy live on in Ada, no doubt touching thousands of lives along the way.
Ekko
We are all still mourning Ekko’s passing in 2018. Daniel Ballin, CEO and Administrator of Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital said of Ekko, “The impact she had is difficult to overstate. She helped thousands of patients along on their journey, she provided emotional support, motivation, humor, and made therapy full and meaningful. She became a part of our rehab family.” In a rehabilitation setting, patient morale and motivation in their recovery after injury or illness can be challenging. The staff members at Riverside saw Ekko help bridge the gaps for patients who did not otherwise respond to hospital staff and made therapy complete for all patients.
Thank you Newport New Shipbuilding for making this partnership possible.
