Office. Cox is still employed at the college as an industry training coordinator. Serena Moore, who worked with student services, was the 2017 recipient. In 2018 Bridget Meneghini received the award for her work as a student services advisor. Meneghini began employment with the college in 2012 and continues as an advisor today. The part time outstanding support staff award was not given in 2019. College Activities From 2010 to 2019 a variety of free college activities were held for the community. NRCC’s faculty, staff, and students volunteered their time planning and working the college events. Most of the activities have been held on campus for decades, such as the Veterans Day ceremony; Black History Month; and the Fiddle, Banjo, and Dance Club. Sponsored by student services staff, Friday Night Lights began in 2019 as a community outreach at local high school football and basketball games. Annual Activities . A Veterans Day ceremony was held on campus each year on or near November 11. The ceremony included the presentation of the colors, retiring of the flags, patriotic music, recognition of veterans in attendance, and a keynote speaker. A Black History Month program was held annually in February and included a guest speaker and special musical groups or individual performers. Two additional annual college activities included Cyber Day and the Campus Cruise In. During the spring, members of NRCC’s Computer Club provide a free tune up and virus scan on laptops, desktops, tablets, and phones. The Campus Cruise In, hosted by the automotive technology department, features classic cars from regional car club

the award for her service since 2003 as a web developer. The recipient in 2011 was Antonia (Toney) Jara who worked in the admissions office from 1990 until her retirement in 2011. The 2012 award winner was Delinda Phillips who worked with adult basic education from 2009 to 2014. The 2013 recipient was Teresa M. Jones, who has served as the college’s library assistant and cataloger since 2004. There was no recipient in 2014. In 2015 Sharon Harvey, an employee in workforce development and external relations and a graduate of NRCC, received the part-time support staff award. She currently serves as the chief assessment specialist and financial specialist for adult education and transitional programs. In 2016, the recipient was Barry Cox who worked in the Veterans that have happened in their lives since then. I hung in there as an adjunct instructor for many years, when it probably made more sense in terms of career prospects, to move on and do something else. Ultimately, that persistence and commitment paid off. Today, I struggle to see myself doing any thing else or working anywhere else. This job, my students, and working at New River Community College has really shaped the core of the person I’ve become. JONATHAN ALLEN Instructor of Communication Employment at NRCC: Adjunct Instructor 2008-2021 and Full-time 2021-present I have gained a strong sense of identity and purpose from working at New River Community College and teaching public speaking in particu lar. I was an adjunct instructor juggling teaching at NRCC and at other colleges and universities for over a decade. I always liked the people at NRCC, and the students were a wonderful mixture of people of many different backgrounds and age groups and life experiences. Today, I bump into former students all the time. I always love hear ing how they enjoyed my class, or how what they learned in my class helped them with other things
