Started in 1985, the recognition of a full-time support staff member who has made valuable contributions to the college continued in this decade. The full-time outstanding support staff award for 2010 was given to Tammy Smith, office supervisor in admissions and records and an NRCC graduate. Smith is currently employed as the interim dean of student services at the college. The 2011 full-time support staff award went to Lynn Taylor, administrative assistant in the Division of Business and Technologies and an NRCC graduate. Taylor is currently serving the college as the administrative assistant for instruction and student services. In 2012 Ernie Garter received the award. Garter was a full-time senior maintenance technician in Facilities Services from 1978 to his retirement in 2017 (39 years). Jonathon Surratt, web and graphic services manager in the Instructional Technology Center (ITC) and a graduate of NRCC, was the 2013 recipient. Surratt was employed in the ITC for 18 years. In 2019 Surratt became an assistant professor of computer science/information technology at the college. The 2014 recipient was Kimberly Brewer, interpreter in the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Brewer continues to serve the college as the interim financial aid manager. Shirley Mann, an office services specialist in the Word Processing Center and a graduate of NRCC, received the award in 2015. Mann worked full-time from 2004 to her retirement in 2017. After retirement, Mann returned to the college in a part-time administrative support position in two departments--word processing and nursing. The 2016 recipient

of the full-time support staff award was Elaine Powell (Powell-Hawkins), financial aid assistant. Powell began employment in 1996 and continues in this role today. Monica Carden, procurement officer in the Business Office received the award in 2017. Carden was hired in 1980 and served the college for 44 years. The last full-time outstanding support staff award of this decade went to Shauna Crosscup in 2018. Crosscup began employment as the college’s financial aid manager in Fall 2017. She previously worked in financial aid at WCC from 2007 to 2017. Crosscup is currently an associate professor of business management at NRCC. The full-time outstanding support staff award was not given in 2019. Support Staff Awards for Part-Time Employees . Beginning in 1999, the college recognized a part-time outstanding support staff member for valuable contributions to the college. In 2010 Kexin Zhang received portion of my life has been at NRCC. I am so thankful for such a wonderful place and all the good times I have enjoyed here. But, most of all, I love the people here. I consider myself blessed to have had such a wonderful journey. SHIRLEY MANN Word Processing Specialist NRCC Graduate Employment at NRCC: Part-time 1993-2004 and 2017-present; Full-time 2004-2017 I have been a part of NRCC for many years and in many different capacities. After my place of employment for 25 years shut down, I decided to attend NRCC and further my education. As an older student, I was very nervous. The faculty were amazing and made my experience a wonderful one. After graduating, I was hired to work in the Word Processing Center. I worked part-time, then full-time for many years. As a place of employment, New River has been another great choice. I retired and then decided to return to work part-time again. As you can see, a big
