Education (DE) area and the area between DE and the library in Martin Hall, and the renovation of the offices in the administrative wing in Godbey Hall and the forensics lab in Rooker Hall. An automated manufacturing/ fabrication lab and a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) lab with 3D printers were constructed in the student lounge in Martin Hall. A classroom located in the library housed a second DIY lab to serve workforce development and members of the community. In 2019 the library was updated to an open concept to build a sense of community among students. In addition, the Financial Aid Office was upgraded to a more inviting, open atmosphere. In 2015 the Christiansburg site was expanded by 9,700 square feet. The expansion included a new graphic arts lab, workforce development classrooms and offices, a DIY lab, a 24-seat classroom, and a 3D printing lab containing 18 printers. Faculty and Staff News NRCC’s Sixth President . On July 1, 2017, Dr. Pat Huber became the college’s sixth president and the first female to lead the institution. Since 1992 Dr. Huber had served the college in several capacities--an assistant professor of English, dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences, and vice president for instruction and student services. Dr. Huber succeeded Dr. Jack Lewis who had held the position of president for 17 years. Dr. Charlie White, former vice president for instruction and student services at NRCC and former president at Wytheville Community College, served as interim president during the national search and hiring process. Dr. White transferred the authority of leading NRCC to Dr. Huber in a “Passing the
Torch” ceremony held in June 2017. The presidential inauguration ceremony for Dr. Huber, scheduled for September 14, 2018, was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence, which made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, on September 14. The hurricane brought heavy rainfall and major flooding to Virginia. An inaugural college family barbeque was held in Edwards Hall on November 2, 2018. Ben Campbell, professor of English and an author, read “Our Guiding Hawthorn,” a poem he wrote in honor of Dr. Huber. Dr. Huber was named a 2017 Distinguished Alumna by Old Dominion University (ODU) for bringing extraordinary honor to ODU through distinction in her field. She earned her Ph.D. in Community College Leadership from ODU in 2006. Dr. Huber also received the Carl and Ruth Looney Humanitarian Award in 2017, which is presented to an Emory & Henry College graduate who has shown extraordinary commitment to others. Dr. Huber graduated from E&H with a bachelor’s degree and completed a master’s degree at West Virginia University. She was named the 2018 Business Executive of the Year by the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. In 2019 Dr. Huber received the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Paragon President award for her outstanding support of student success by recognizing the academic achievement, leadership, and service of PTK members at NRCC. New Personnel . Seventy-nine (79) new full-time faculty and staff joined NRCC from 2010 to 2019. Of these 79 employees, 40 are still employed full time at the college at the time of publication.
