On behalf of the New River Community Action Board of Directors, we are

pleased to share with you our 2020-2021 Annual Report. While the report

contains some numbers and data, the real story is the people; both the people

who come to us for assistance, and the staff, volunteers, and funders providing

the assistance.

Last year, as we navigated through the chaotic, uncertain, pandemic world, we

experienced an emotional roller coaster of loss and hope, and we were witness

to unprecedented acts of courage, kindness, and generosity. The need for our

services, a safety net that provides for a soft landing, was more important than

ever. Promoting well-being and self-reliance within the NRV community was

Thanks to the effort of dedicated staff, Board members, volunteers, and

funding partners we offered hope and a helping hand to 7,272 people living in

the NRV. We are grateful to all who helped us serve our neighbors when they

needed us most.

During the pandemic, Chad struggled to maintain his level of income. Since he

had never had difficulty paying his rent before, he didn’t know about the

resources available to him. When he knew he wouldn’t be able to get caught

up on rent, he abandoned his apartment out of frustration and hopelessness,

leaving it – as well as all his belongings – behind.

getting a replacement ID and finding a better job, tasks that proved to be

much harder during COVID-19. But Chad persevered. Once he was stable, he

began to look for a new apartment.

he had previously lived in the same unit for more than a decade, when he

This blemish on his record prevented Chad from being approved for most

housing.

Fortunately, NRCA staff negotiated with the landlord and an apartment

VITA volunteers assisted 130 families with free income tax preparation saving filers $47,750 in

tax preparation fees. Additionally, families in our service area received assistance with various

inquiries related to tax law, economic incentive payments, tax refunds, and other general IRS

ssues. VITA helped our clients receive $274,291 in federal and Virginia tax refunds

CHIP staff members help families set and attain health and self-sufficiency goals, assist with

transportation, conduct developmental screenings, and help families access other community

Enrolled families receive regular home visits from CHIP Registered Nurses who provide health

education, medical case management, and early screenings for developmental delays. The

Nurse supports the child’s physician ensuring access to preventative health care and other

A vital component of the CHIP program is the Parents as Teachers (PAT) parent education

curriculum. All CHIP Family Educators are nationally certified trainers. PAT drives home the

message that parents are their children’s first and best teachers.

Head Start continued to provide services during the pandemic providing

family engagement, health, education, and a quality Pre-Kindergarten

experience by offering flexibility in our service delivery model. Parents were
