The Chamber formed a 501(3)(c) Charitable Foundation in 2012 whose mission is to provide support for the charitable, educational, and scientific undertakings of the Chamber. Our Foundation enables the Chamber and its members to create opportunities for tax-deductible contributions to those areas addressed previously. Our Teacher of the Year fund was launched in 2012 with the intent of providing a financial reward for teachers in our community. Each year, we have given the Teacher of the Year a gift of $1,000 and additional gifts. Educational programs are being designed based on the need to advance the professional and personal development of business owners and their employees throughout Montgomery County. For funding, scholarship, and ongoing development, fundraisers are conducted throughout the year. We are moving into the 12th year of our annual BOCCE Ball Tournament, which helps raise funds for the Foundation. AWord from the Chamber CEO, Steve Baffuto

It is quite unbelievable that I have been with the Chamber a little over a year now. In that time, I began as the staff member with the least amount of experience and now, I have the most experience amongst our staff. However, this hasn’t slowed down our productivity. In fact, we are busier now than ever before. In one of my favorite Leadership books titled “Good to Great”, author Jim Collins describes how executives ignite their companies from good to great. Collins details the importance of the first step, which is having the right people on the bus. The second step is figuring out how to take it someplace great. Months ago, when I was faced with two vacancies in key positions, I knew I had to hire the right people because the success of the Chamber depended on it. With the Board’s full support, we acted immediately. The first vacant position within the Chamber was the

Membership Director. We received resumes from several excellent candidates. Two of which really stood out from the rest. Ultimately, we decided on Marisa Smith. Marissa’s positive personality, sales experience and friendly demeanor made her the right person for the job. However, before Marissa’s first day I was faced with another vacancy in Marketing. Our regular Chamber staff of four was now down to just two. However, this provided another opportunity to hire the “right people” as Collins noted. Fortunately, we again received several good candidates for the job when posted. We decided on Scott Whyte. His vast marketing knowledge and a graduate from Virginia Tech in Communication made him the right person for the job. The third person on the Chamber staff is Rachel Lucas. Rachel started a few months after I did in 2022 and recently went from part time to full time. As the Program Coordinator she handles organizing events and will eventually take over accounts receivable and payable. With Rachel’s banking experience, this should be an easy transition into a new role. Now that the right people are on the “bus” as Collin’s states, it’s time to take the Chamber to somewhere great. Just in the short time this team has been together (October 2022), I have seen great success. Our staff has produced three large events and have numerous upcoming events on the calendar. Our largest event was the 2022 Annual Dinner with over 400 attendees. We have experienced great turnout and support at our events thanks to our loyal members. Regarding our members, there has been significant growth in membership and helpful changes made through marketing materials. Membership has increased from 577 in October 2022 to 621 as of March 2023 and the Monday Morning Message and Tuesday Newsletters were redesigned to improve clear communication for our membership. We continue to offer high quality programs and resources to help our members network and develop skills to grow and succeed. I’m a true believer that the success of a business depends on the people within. With the right people in place, I know we will reach our goals and much more!

Meet the Staff Steve Baffuto - President/CEO Steve handles overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Chamber. He has been on staff as President/CEO since December 2021. In his time with the Chamber, membership has grown by 150 members. Rachel Lucas - Programs and Events Coordinator Rachel oversees organizing and coordinating the events and programs that the Chamber puts on. She often serves as a point of contact for members when they set up their ribbon cuttings. Marissa Smith - Membership Director Marissa is often the first person that a business will speak to when joining the Chamber. She oversees guiding future

members through the onboarding process of the Chamber. She also enjoys connecting members with others so that their businesses can grow. Scott Whyte - Communications and Marketing Coordinator Scott is in charge of planning, producing, and executing all of the Chamber’s marketing efforts. He also sends out the Monday Morning Message and the Weekly Newsletter.

Chamber Com mitees Business Awards and Recognition Committee - This committee is one of the most prestigious groups outside the Board and should be held to a high level of trust and integrity. The team is comprised of up to 15 members who are previous winners (2020, 2021 and 2022), possible appointed members, and a staff member. The role of staff is to advise and support, not influence. The 2023 committee will examine the recommendations of the 2022 team and make the necessary revisions to improve the process. This group will also create the committee members’ code of conduct. The Ambassador Team - The Ambassador Team is comprised of a unique group of volunteers. These volunteers must apply for a seat on the team and have their supervisor’s written support to participate. They are interviewed and reviewed against criteria. This committee serves the Chamber through membership, recruitment, and retention and program support with volunteer activities to best guide members and staff. The Business Resource Development Committee - As referenced in the MCCC vision, mission, and reflective of the core value statements, the Chamber is a member-driven organization created to support our members and the business community’s needs. This Committee is responsible for ensuring resources are available for our members to grow and prosper. This Committee is comprised of 20 members who are interested in building the local economy. The Talent & Education Committee - This committee meets to leverage work in the local community and region. Multiple groups are working to address talent in this region, and the goals and objectives below target this community. This Board believes that education and educational efforts support the local talent pipeline. The Leadership New River Valley Committee - This program has been built to be self-sustaining under the Chamber of Commerce. This Board believes that Leadership New River Valley (aka Leadership NRV) belongs to the Chamber and alumni. Leadership NRV will be managed and facilitated by a Board member, up to four deans annually, and alumni subject matter experts. This group will meet the second Wednesday of each month from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The Legislative Committee - This Board believes that the Chamber serves as the voice of the business community. The Legislative Committee is responsible for advocating and establishing sound policy to help the business community. The Chamber supports these initiatives for the betterment of our economy. The Infrastructure Committee - This committee, which can host up to 24 MCCC members, to serve our community’s infrastructure. Infrastructure is defined as public systems, services, and facilities of a community that is necessary for economic activity, including power and water supplies, public transportation, telecommunications, and roads. *If you’re interested in joining a committee, please email Steve Baffuto at s.baffuto@montgomerycc.org

CASE Groups

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Chamber Accelerate Sales Executives Groups (CASE) were created to help members’ network and grow their businesses. A CASE group is a business referral network that promotes interaction, networking and relationship building. As a CASE group member, you will have the opportunity to develop sources and contacts that can help generate sales for your business.

CASE Groups provide a direct networking opportunity through weekly group meetings for Chamber members to generate referrals, build relationships, and share best practices. The chamber currently has four active CASE groups with around 80 total members, with our newest group just formed in January 2023. In 2022, the three CASE groups generated a total of $4.5 million in closed referred business. Who can join this amazing networking program? Any chamber member, organization or company with an active Montgomery County Chamber membership qualifies to join a CASE group at no additional charge. CASE members must be active, positive contributors to their group, committed to attending weekly. Seats are limited to one member of each industry, per CASE group. A waitlist is available for full groups or industry filled spots.

Ribbon Cuttings

The Chamber is proud to assist its members in hosting ribbon cutting celebrations. The Chamber promotes these events to the local communities and invite local officials to attend to ensure the members have a great turnout. So far in 2023, we have seen an average turnout of over 60 people per ribbon cutting!

Annual Golf Tournament Every year, The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce hosts a golf tournament. This event is a fan favorite. Each year over 150 golfers gather to compete for fun prizes, bragging rights, and networking. Once the golfing is completed, we celebrate our golfers with a Business After Hours.

This year, The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Women’s Leadership Conference. With over 200 women in attendance, this conference had expert presenters that covered topics related to the theme of New Normal, New You: Balanced Body, Brain, and Brand. The conference also gave out 4 awards to local women who heavily impacted the business community in Montgomery County. Business Showcase In 2022, The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce hosted the Buy Local Business Showcase for the first time since 2019. Over 80 businesses took part in showcasing their offerings to our community. During the event raffle prizes were given out to

lucky attendees. The Chamber is excited to host this event again at the Inn at Virginia Tech in 2023!

Annual Dinner The 2022 Annual Dinner and Awards were held at the Inn at Virginia Tech in front of over 400 guests. During this meeting we discussed how the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce has impacted the bussiness community. The Chamber also gave recongition to members who went above and beyond in mutiple categories.

Virginia Tech Hall of Famer, Mike Burnup, served as the Master of Ceromony for this event. His energy helped make this event a huge success. The 2023 Annual Dinner will be held on December 7th, 2023 at The Inn at Virginia Tech. The Chamber looks forward to hosting this dinner again!

Education Montgomery County is home to some of the country’s leading institutions. Virginia Tech offers a competitive education with over 150 majors to choose from. Or enroll in New River Community College, offering exceptional programs in occupational, technological, and business programs. NRCC offers both associate degrees and bachelor transfer programs. We are also home to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, also called VCOM. VCOM is a private, non-profit medical school located in Blacksburg, where students are dedicated to improving community health. Blacksburg is also home to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, established in 1978. The vet college is home to over 700 veterinary students who treat over 80 thousand animals every year.

Insightful communities are attractive to visitors and are inviting to new residents. Good education is one important aspect that brings vitality to a community. Montgomery County Public Schools serve over 10,000 students in grades pre-k through 12 in 19 different schools and fosters a nurturing environment for learning with positive relationships and creative outputs. MCPS uses engagement, encouragement, and empowerment so every student graduates career and college ready and becomes a productive, responsible citizen. MCPS accomplishes this mission through the implementation of the model for effective instruction and a strategic plan. MCPS school district has received recognition for its exceptional performance, and places a strong emphasis on actively involving students in the learning process and establishing strong connections with them, in order to deliver effective and suitable instruction.

Radford University serves the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation through a wide range of academic, cultural, human service and research programs. Radford University is a comprehensive public university of 7,718 students that is known for its attentive relationships with the strong faculty and students. Innovative use of technology in the learning environment and vibrant student life shape the beautiful 211-acre university. The University offers their students 76 bachelor’s degree programs and 28 master’s programs to choose from. Not to mention, they are recognized for six doctoral programs at the graduate level. Through its educational programs, the university aims to enhance students’ analytical and problem-solving skills, encourage creativity and critical thinking, and cultivate their leadership potential. With an average class size of 23 students, collaboration is easily made a part of the classroom structure. Radfords commitment to embracing change and regularly assessing and improving its curriculum help create adapting and caring individuals. Radford’s student-centered facilities and programs extend students’ social development. Getting involved at Radford University is a great way to feel a sense of belongingness. More than 250 student clubs and organizations will ensure students find the best fit for them. Another great way to get involved is through Fraternity and Sorority Life, comprising over 20 general fraternities and sororities. Joining can promise lifelong membership and involvement, open doors for network support, and dedicated time to philanthropic causes. Hokies take pride in their athletics. Virginia Tech has been atop the elite Atlantic Coast Conference in many sports and have made several NCAA tournament appearances with 22 varsity teams participating. In addition, there are 39 intramural sports, on-campus gyms, aquatic center, boxing gym, and more than 100 group exercise classes taught each week. The Virginia Tech student body plays an impactful role in creating the best atmosphere in college sports and have been made to thoughtfully improve the game day experience for all involved.

NewRiver CommunityCollege New River Community College is a two year institution of higher learning opportunity located in Dublin with an additional satellite campus at the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. The comprehensive community college services 4,127 students, accepting all students. The campus offers contemporary and well-established amenities to support both vocational/technical programs and university parallel programs. Leadership New River Valley enhances participants’ leadership skills and encourages the application of what is learned each month in their work. This program goes one step further and provides the class with the opportunity to give back to the community through a Leadership Legacy project. In 2021, Sleep in Heavenly Peace - New River Valley has now built 450 beds. The Legacy Project works with a local non-profit to build capacity for their respective vision and mission. The class members learn about themselves, apply principles of change management, and expedite applying learned principles in a controlled environment provided by the local non-profit. The Chamber uses the Phillips Model of ROI to calculate the benefit to the non-profit and the community.
