S Elke Schneider received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Literature in 1997 from the University of Eichstätt, Germany, where she specialized in foreign/second language learning and learning disabilities. For almost 30 years, she has taught literacy and special education courses at universities and teacher education centers across the US and internationally, focusing on multisensory, research evidenced instruction and the use of culture-sensitive children’s and adolescent literature. She has also run community-focused literacy support centers for over two decades. At Winthrop University in South Carolina, she has provided statewide teacher training to meet multilingual learners' literacy and acculturation needs in the general education classroom through three large federal grants since 2008.
