S Elke Schneider received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Literature in 1997 from the University of Eichstäett, Germany where she specialized in foreign/second language learning and learning disabilities. For almost 30 years, she has taught literacy and special education courses at universities and teacher education centers in the US and internationally focusing on multimodal research-evidenced instruction and the use of diversity-sensitive children’s and adolescent literature. For the past 20 years, she has been at Winthrop University where she has also has been providing statewide teacher training to meet the literacy and acculturation needs of multilingual learners in the general education classroom through three large federal grants for the past 16 years.
