Torsional Gear Drive Advantages Traditional push–pull drive linkages for 500 kV switches must be robust in design to transmit the required torque to the switch phases as well as minimizing deflection and lost motion in the interphase rods, which can exceed 40 feet. The torsional gear drive system supplied by Pascor Atlantic utilizes precision gear sets to apply the required torque at the switch rotating insulator stack thus eliminating the need to transmit the torques through the entire drive linkage. Use of the torsional gear drive arrangement has also significantly reduced field assembly time when compared to push–pull arrangements. The switch bearing assembly incorporates a worm gear drive mechanism. Utilizing a 30:1 ratio the worm gear easily transmits the required output load to the switch with minimal input torque. Interphase rods are directly attached to the input shaft of switch bearing assembly. A 90‐degree bevel gear assembly is then used to transmit the operating torque from the multi‐revolution MO‐10 motor operator through a vertical operating pipe. By eliminating many of the adjustment points and components found on a traditional push‐pull linkage arrangement field installation times have been reduced by over 40%. Commonality of parts for each switch phase also provides flexibility in operator location without relocating an individual phase, should a field modification by necessary. The torsional gear drive provided by Pascor Atlantic is our standard offering for 500 kV switches. The effectiveness of the arrangement offers lower stress on linkage components increasing long‐ term reliability, ease of assembly and adjustment, and most importantly, a lower installed cost.
