AMessage from Father Anthony
Dear Roanoke Catholic Family,
This has been quite a beautiful school year already with so many opportunities to give thanks to the Lord. I am now in my second year as school chaplain here on campus, and I must say that I ’ ve been especially encouraged by all of the incredible energy and

excitement surrounding so many of the activities we weren ’ t able to participate in together last year — All - school masses, football games, pep rallies, homecoming, extracurricular clubs, and so much more. Things are moving in a wonderful direction here at Roanoke Catholic, and I would ask you to please keep praying that we not only get back to “ normal, ” but come back stronger than ever before as a school community. I know these past two years have been tough on all our students, their families and our faculty and staff, but the resilience and the life - lessons we ’ ve all had to learn in the midst of these times is testament to the grace of God at work in each of our lives. He loves us so much, and will never abandon us. Above all, He proves His love in the Most Holy Eucharist, which we have the privilege and honor of gathering to celebrate in worship every single week as a school. That ’ s the heart of Roanoke Catholic, and I am convinced that if we stay close to Jesus, everyone at our school will continue to excel and grow into the people we were created to be.

HOCO 2021 was such a long - awaited breath of fresh air! Celtics had an incredible Spirit Week with a LS Theme Day of Disney/ Superhero Day and US Theme Days consisting of “ Anything BUT a Backpack ”, “ Decades Day ” by grade level to include Roaring ‘20 s, Y2K, ’80 s, ‘90 s, & ‘70 s, Class Unity Day, and then a school wide Celtic Pride Day on Friday complete with a Pep Rally full of games and overflowing school spirit! Thursday ’ s Bonfire Night brought back the tradition of the Junior vs Senior Powder Puff Game that hadn ’ t happened in years, and it was a welcome treat for all those present! The students even took it upon themselves to gather parental permission in order to participate. We had a gorgeous night complete with food trucks and a Mexican feast, a stellar FCA Car Float Parade, THE GAME, Introductions of our Fall Athletic teams, and the Bonfire to cap off the memorable night!
The Class of 1971 celebrated their 50th Reunion on June 26th. The event was hosted at the home of Gene '67 and Tracy Kormann Brady ‘71. The celebration included 20 alumni from the class of 1971 along with 11 spouses, and 4 special guests. Some classmates traveled from California, Arizona, Kansas City and Missouri for this special occasion. Welcome Back Alumni
The Class of 2010 visited campus this summer. We were so happy to see them back on the Hill.
THE LOST RING
John Adams, Class of 1993, attended our homecoming game on October 15 th to collect his class ring. He said he lost his ring at a retreat at Smith Mountain Lake back in 1993 and it was eventually recovered on Bent Mountain years later. Former RCS assistant football coach, Kenny Wimmer, said someone on Bent Mountain brought him the ring after they found it in a field. Matt Peck RCS Athletic Director, was able to locate John and let him know his class ring was found. John was pleased to have his ring back nearly 30 years later.
Congratulations to the Class of 2023 on your Ring Day! Ring Day has been a tradition at Roanoke Catholic for more years than many can remember. Since at least 1981, this ceremony signifies the beginning of the junior class ’ journey to graduation while reflecting on commitment, relationships, and family. Each Junior student's family was invited to attend this special ceremony. We began with a welcome and prayer for those gathered, a scripture reading, and a beautiful and heartfelt reflection from the Class of '23 member, Angela Drapac. We also enjoyed a reflection from our 2021 Teacher of the Year, and United States Military Academy at West Point Graduate, Paul Begeman, who spoke to the significance of traditions in his own life, having just attended his 40th Reunion at West Point. The ceremony continued with a blessing of the rings at which time students were called to come
Ring Day
forward with their parents, who then placed the ring on their child's finger. Three time - honored traditions were then explained, regarding the turning of the rings. Whether you have been a Celtic for over a decade, or as recently as this year, we are family and this day marks a significant point along our journey.

Congratulations Class of 2021!
A special thank you to the members of the Class of 1970, led by David Turk and his committee, Greg Haase, Sheila Oyler Hogan, Mike Attalla, Marvin Patterson, Suzanne Stump Rowland, and Evie Slone, for making our LED sign a reality. Members of the class raised $20,000 and the school matched their contributions. The sign is in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1970.

Barbara Ann Thomas Isaac, Class of 1952, stopped by the school for a tour and to reminisce about her time on “ The Hill ”. She enjoyed looking at past pictures and was pleased that we had a framed display of her time on the court with fellow classmates. From posing in a defensive stance to discovering an athletic letter belonging to her high school boyfriend, she was happy to peruse the many wonderful treasures that we have preserved from the past.

Afghan Refugee Fundraiser
Mrs. Vanden Eykel ’ s Catholic Social Teaching class was excited to announce a community fundraising effort to support the Afghan refugees now living here in Virginia! Students came up with the idea to help the refugees that had to resettle in a strange new location. They created the fliers and posters in our hallways and some of the content on social media promoting the fundraiser. Students addressed Faculty at the monthly meeting and requested an out - of - uniform day for all students who participated at any level. Finally, they proposed a highly sought - after Student vs Faculty Kickball game for the grade level raising the most funds.
Over the course of 5 days, Celtics more than doubled our Catholic Social Teaching class ’ goal of $2,500. On the last day, after we had already surpassed the original goal the day prior, an additional $1,800 was collected bringing our total to over $5,000 raised for the refugees here locally.
The fundraiser was run in conjunction with Commonwealth Catholic Charities and even garnered the attention of WSLS who interviewed Mrs. Vanden Eykel and Freshman, Andy Wang who said he wants the refugees to know that they are cared about. “ I hope it makes them feel more welcome in our society as they are far from their own society in Afghanistan, ” Wang said. “ They are not alone, or isolated in Roanoke. ”
