Welcome We are so grateful you are here to join us for this beautiful simcha for our son, Gideon Matthew. Gideon has studied hard this past year in preparation for this day, and we could not be more proud. We recognize that you have come from near and far, you have traveled, and taken time from your busy lives to be here with us. Thank you. Thank you for reflecting the love back to us that we feel so deeply for all of you. Today, Gideon assumes the religious, spiritual and ethical responsibilities that come with being a Jewish adult by becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Now, as a full member of the Jewish community, Gideon will be able to be counted in a minyan, a quorum of 10, the minimum required for holding a prayer service or reading from the Torah. The centerpiece of today’s celebration will be when Gideon has his very first aliyah; the first time he will be permitted to recite blessings over the Torah on behalf of the congregation. He will also chant part of this week’s Torah portion. We hope, if this is your first Bar Mitzvah, that you will learn something about Judaism. If this is your first time joining the beautiful Blacksburg Jewish Community Center congregation, we welcome you.

TORAH, Ki Tavo Deuteronomy 26: 1-19

1. When you enter the land that the Eternal your God is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle in, 2. you shall take some of every first fruit of the soil, which you harvest from the land that the Eternal your God is giving you, put it in a basket and go to the place where the Eternal your God will choose to establish the divine name. 3. You shall go to the priest in charge at that time and say to him, “I acknowledge this day before the Eternal your God that I have entered the land that the Eternal swore to our fathers to assign to us.” 4. The priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down in front of the altar of the Eternal your God. 5. You shall then recite as follows before the Eternal your God: “My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation. 6. The Egyptians dealt harshly with us and oppressed us, they imposed heavy labor upon us. 7. We cried to the Eternal, the God of our ancestors, and the Eternal heard our plea and saw our plight, our misery, and our oppression. 8. The Eternal freed us from Egypt by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm and awesome power, and by signs and portents, 9. bringing us to this place and giving us this land, a land overflowing with milk and honey.

10. Wherefore I now bring the first fruits of the soil with You, Eternal One, have given me.”You shall leave it before the Eternal your God and bow low before the Eternal your God. 11. And you shall enjoy, together with the family of the Levite and the stranger in your midst, all the bounty that the Eternal your God has bestowed upon you and your household. 12. When you have set aside in full the tenth part of your yield—in the third year, the year of the tithe—and have given it to the family of the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat their fill in your settlements, 13. you shall declare before the Eternal your God: “I have cleared out the consecrated portion from the house; and I have given it to the family of the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, just as You commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor neglected any of Your commandments: 14. have not eaten of it while in mourning, I have not cleared out any of it while I was impure, and I have not deposited any of it with the dead. I have obeyed the Eternal my God; I have done just as You commanded me. 15. Look down fromYour holy abode, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the soil You have given us, a land flowing with milk and honey, as You swore to our fathers.” 16. The Eternal your God commands you this day to observer these laws and rules; observe them faithfully with all your heart and soul.

17. You have affirmed this day that the Eternal is your God, in whose ways you will walk, whose laws and commandments and rules you will observe, and whom you will obey. 18. And the Eternal has affirmed this day that you are, as promised, God’s treasured people who shall observe all the divine commandments, 19. and that God will set you, in fame and renown and glory, high above all the nations that God has made; and that you shall be, as promised, a holy people to the Eternal your God.

HAFTORAH Ki Tavo Isaiah Chapter 60 1. Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the ETERNAL has shone upon you. 2. Behold! Darkness shall cover the earth, and thick clouds the peoples; but upon you the ETERNAL will shine, and His Presence be seen over you. 3. And nations shall walk by your light, kings, by your shining radiance. 4. Raise your eyes and look about: they have all gathered and come to you. Your sons shall be brought from afar, your daughters like babes on shoulders. 5. As you behold, you will glow; your heart will throb and thrill—For the wealth of the sea shall pass on to you, the riches of nations shall flow to you. 6. Dust clouds of camels shall cover you, dromedaries of Midian and Ephah. They all shall come from Sheba; they shall bear gold and frankincense, and shall herald the glories of the ETERNAL. 7. 18. The cry “Violence!” shall no more be heard in your land, nor “Wrack and ruin!” within your borders. And you shall name your walls “Victory” and your gates “Renown.” 19. No longer shall you need the sun for light by day, nor the shining of the moon for radiance [by night]; for the ETERNAL shall be your light everlasting, your G-d shall be your glory. 20. It is customary to throw candy at the Bar Mitzvah boy when he has completed the prayer after the Haftorah, to wish him a “sweet” life as he makes the transition to adulthood. Children are invited to come up to the bima to retrieve and eat the candy once it has been thrown.
