Virginia Tech Entrepreneur Challenge May 23, 2018 The Lyric Theatre, Blacksburg

The Virginia Tech Entrepreneur Challenge is a campus-wide, student startup competition that brings together successful alumni-entrepreneurs, industry partners, and students to showcase the best new ventures. Interdisciplinary teams from across campus compete for the best business model and a chance to win up to $60,000! The competition was created to inspire entrepreneurial minds and provide significant startup support to student entrepreneurs. The Entrepreneur Challenge is open to graduate and undergraduate students from all colleges and majors and is focused on supporting concepts in their early stages of development. Therefore, applicants must not have received more than $100,000 in investments from private investors and/or government agencies before the Entrepreneur Challenge team registration deadline of February 9, 2018. Over 100 teams registered to compete this year. Finalists are selected through a phased judging program. Round 1 of the Entrepreneur Challenge consists of a pitch video competition, where teams record and submit 1-minute pitches. The Top 30 Teams (Semi- Finalists) move on to Round 2 where they submit investor-ready executive summaries, which are judged by a panel of faculty and industry experts. The Top 12 teams pitch live for $60,000 in prizes, including the $25,000 grand prize. The grand prize winner of the Entrepreneur Challenge will advance to the Virginia Tech Global Entrepreneur Challenge to compete on a world stage for the $30,000 grand prize, August 16-25, 2018, in Washington, D.C., and Blacksburg, Virginia.

Nathan Latka studied Architecture and Business at Virginia Tech as part of the class of 2012. While studying he launched his first company which he grew to 10,000 paying customers, $5m in total revenue, and a $10.5m valuation before selling to a competitor in 2016.

Davis Smith is the founder and CEO of Cotopaxi, an outdoor gear brand with a humanitarian mission. He is a member of the United Nations Foundation’s “Global Entrepreneurs Council” and is a “Presidential Leadership Scholar.” Davis was Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s “CEO of the Year” in 2016 and previously started Baby.com.br, Brazil’s “Startup of the Year” in 2012. Davis holds an MBA from the Wharton School, an MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from BYU. Davis is an adventurer who has visited 70 countries. He has floated down the Amazon on a self- made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea.

Judges of the Virginia Tech Entrepreneur Challenge

Kristen Badgley leads the West Region for Accenture DayNine (Workday) team, collaborating with a talented group of Workday experts. She is a Professional Services executive with more than 20 years of expertise working with geographically diverse technology clients. She led business development initiatives for service firms including DocuSign, Korn/Ferry, Accenture, Nextel, and Proxicom, where she created the Investor Relations function for the CFO. Kristen started her career as an engineer with Lockheed Martin. Kristen serves as Chairman of the Board for the Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Northern California. She earned an MBA from Harvard University, an MS degree in systems engineering and a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech. Daniel Beck is the chief financial officer of SVB Financial Group, responsible for all finance, treasury and accounting functions for the company, and a member of the executive committee. Daniel joined SVB Financial Group from Bancwest Corp. where he was CFO and Treasurer and a member of the executive management committee. Previously, he was CFO of Bank of the West and the bank’s controller. In his former positions, Beck was responsible for leadership of the finance function, along with large scale transformation programs. He managed the relationships and communication with the parent company, regulators, rating agencies and management and he also played a lead role in the company’s successful submission of its first Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) stress test. Prior to joining Bancwest, Beck held financial positions at Wells Fargo and Freddie Mac and worked at Deloitte & Touche and E*Trade Financial Corporation earlier in his career. Daniel earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Ryan Carter is a globally oriented serial entrepreneur with international business interests throughout the United States, Latin America, and Asia in areas of turnkey manufacturing and plastics recycling. After living in Mexico for seven years, Ryan became a Puerto Rico resident in 2017, from where he directs his business activities and investments while continuing to travel extensively, his top passion in life, having visited over 100 countries to date.

Gyasi C. Chisley , PMP, FACHE, currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President, Strategy and Payment Policy/Innovation for UnitedHealthcare. As healthcare transitions to a value-based industry, Gyasi’s platform consists of the creation of new payment strategies for an improved healthcare delivery throughout the United States, fortification of physicians/payer relations, and collaboration/acquisition of companies to improve quality within the portfolio of services provided by UnitedHealthcare. In his most recent post, Gyasi was humbled to serve as CEO for Methodist Healthcare and Senior Vice President for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis, TN. Gyasi lead thousands of Associates, an employed and contracted Medical Staff, and a thriving market within the communities of the greater Memphis region. Gyasi is an accomplished executive and has over 18 years of hospital/ fiscal operations experience with a sound background in ambulatory services, academic medicine, consulting, and federally qualified healthcare centers. Previous positions include VP and COO, UC Health University Medical Center; VP, Business Development/Org Effectiveness, Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati; Executive Director, Business Development, ARAMARK Healthcare in Chicago, IL; and Budget Director, Fiscal Operations for Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Gyasi’s extensive background has allowed him to experience many regions throughout the United States including Chicago, New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Detroit, but he maintains a strong affinity for his hometown, Milwaukee, WI.

Nelson Chu joined Kinetic Ventures in 1998. His investment activities focus on information and infrastructure technologies, enterprise and Internet software, database-related applications, and other emerging software and hardware technologies. He has led a broad range of Kinetic investments including Cardlytics (NASDAQ: CDLX), LogicBlox-Predictix (acquired by Infor), Tower Cloud (acquired by Communications Sales & Leasing; NASDAQ: CSAL), BroadWare (acquired by Cisco; NASDAQ: CSCO), VerticalOne (acquired by SONE; NASDAQ: SONE), FoodBuy (acquired by Compass Group; LSE: CPG.L), Instant Financial, Navistone, and ProctorFree. Prior to joining Kinetic Ventures, Nelson was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and a Development Manager with Oracle. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering (summa cum laude) from Virginia Tech, his MS in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School. Karen Jackson is the president of Apogee Strategic Partners, a Virginia consultancy helping companies and organizations address their most daunting challenges in cyber security, autonomous systems and smart communities and cities. Ms. Jackson formerly served as the Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth. She also served as the Commonwealth’s Deputy Secretary of Technology and Vice President of Broadband Programs for the Center for Innovative Technology. Ms. Jackson served as a senior advisor to Governor McAuliffe on technology matters including innovation, data analytics, telecommunications, cybersecurity, unmanned systems and smart communities. She was also responsible for overseeing the Commonwealth’s IT infrastructure. As Secretary, she was responsible for policy and legislative initiatives, as well as developing programs to facilitate innovation, entrepreneurship, technology development, and adoption. Ms. Jackson has been actively engaged in the federal policy initiatives including the development of the National Broadband Plan. She received a 2009 IP3 award from Public Knowledge for her work in information policy, and was named to Government Technology’s 2010 list of the top 25 Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers. In 2015, she was named to The Governing Institute Women in Government Leadership Program Class, and in 2016 was named as one of State Scoops’ GoldenGov State Executives of the Year. In 2017, Ms. Jackson was named as one of State Scoop’s Top Women in Technology and she and Governor Terry McAuliffe were jointly recognized as 2017 Difference Makers in Cyber Security by the SANS Institute. Her office also received an excellence in Government award from the Southwestern Virginia Technology Council. Ms. Jackson served on a number of Boards including the Center for Innovative Technology, the Virginia Research Investment Committee, and the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP). She also served as Governor McAuliffe’s representative to the FCC’s Intergovernmental Advisory Committee and co-chaired the Commonwealth’s Cyber Security Commission. She holds a bachelor’s of science in business management from Christopher Newport University and a master’s of business administration from The College of William and Mary. Dennis Kelly is the President & CEO of Buchanan and Edwards. In this role he is responsible for developing and executing an aggressive growth strategy that will expand B&E’s solutions into the national security market. He has nearly 30 years of experience growing businesses through M&A and organic growth. Dennis’ previous roles were CEO of IOMAXIS, LLC, an innovative cyber security solutions firm, was the president and CEO of A-T Solutions, Inc., a counter-terrorism solutions firm supporting a variety of defense, intelligence and law enforcement customers. Following the sale of A-T Solutions to PAE, Dennis was appointed the President of PAE’s National Security Solutions business unit. He was previously the president of Tech Teamgovernment solutions and served in a variety of executive positions at Anteon International. Dennis is an adjunct professor in the George Mason University Executive MBA program and serves on the board of directors of the USO of Metropolitan Washington – Baltimore. He is a proud veteran of the US Navy.

Dr. Steve Morgan attended medical school at the University of Virginia and completed his family practice residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1989. After being in private practice for seven years, he joined Carilion Clinic in 1996. He served as a regional medical director in the department of Family and Community Medicine from 1996 until 2011. Since 1999 he has been working with Carilion’s IT department as a physician champion, believing that technology had the potential to not only improve physician efficiency, but also directly affect and improve the delivery of quality patient care. Starting in 2007, he transitioned from full time family medicine to a more active role within information technology and was appointed to the role of Chief Medical Information Officer of Carilion Clinic in 2010. Dr. Morgan has also been involved in Carilion Clinic’s Integration and clinical transformation work serving on multiple committees including the Accountable Care Transformation Committee and the board of directors for Doctors Connected, Carilion’s ACO. He has given multiple presentations and participated in round-table discussions on the topics of health analytics, reporting, research support, and informatics for organizations such as Becker’s Healthcare, The Advisory Board Company, and The Millennium Alliance. He currently serves as Senior Vice President for Information Technology and data analytics, as well as CMIO for Carilion Clinic. Carlos Otal is a Managing Partner in Grant Thornton’s Global Public Sector. He has over 25 years of experience spanning the full range of financial management advisory and assurance services — from internal and financial statement auditing to organizational and process improvement to the assessment and implementation of enterprise systems, including programmanagement, strategy, acquisition and business model development for clients installing enterprise solutions, implementing large-scale commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, or migrating to a shared service provider. Since joining Grant Thornton in 2005, he has led a successful array of financial management and systems engagements for a wide variety of clients, including but not limited to the U.S. Departments of the Treasury, Energy and Defense, as well as the U.S. Social Security Administration, U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the State of California. Sonu Singh is President and CEO at 1901 Group. Recognizing that the delivery of information is currently undergoing a dramatic transformation, Sonu started 1901 Group to close the cost-to-value gap on IT infrastructure by applying proven manufacturing principles to the next generation of IT service management. Having built and sold two IT services companies within the past 10 years, Sonu is utilizing industry practices and principles to execute 1901 Group’s corporate vision of building service operations centers or IT service factories in rural communities with strong university systems. Thanks to a childhood in Blacksburg, Virginia, and a degree from Virginia Tech, Sonu’s personal passion and professional goal is creating sustainable, high-quality technology jobs in rural America. Raymond D. “Ray” Zinn is an inventor, entrepreneur, and the longest serving CEO of a publicly traded company in Silicon Valley. Zinn is known best for conceptualizing and in effect inventing the Wafer Stepper, and for co- founding semiconductor company Micrel (acquired by Microchip in 2015), which provides essential components for smartphones, consumer electronics and enterprise networks. He has served as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of its Board of Directors and President since the Company’s inception in 1978. Zinn has led Micrel profitably through eight major downturns in global chip markets, an impressive achievement. Many chip companies weren’t able to make it through one downturn and very few have survived through all the major downturns. Micrel has been profitable from its very first year, aside from one year during the dot-com implosion. Ray Zinn holds over 20 patents for semiconductor design. He has been mentioned in several books, including Jim Fixx’s The Complete Book of Running and Essentialism by Greg McKeown.
