VALUES

A message from our CEO

When I was 12, I found a quote tucked into the first page of a novel at the library—Truman Capote: “Love, having no geography, knows no boundaries.” It stopped me. Even before the story began, those words spoke volumes. That idea has stayed with me, quietly shaping how I view connection and community. As we reflect on another year of growth and service at CHIP of Roanoke Valley, I am reminded of the profound notion of "love without borders." This concept invites us to embrace a form of love that knows no edge or barrier, transcending societal divides and personal histories. It is a daily practice—an active choice to both give and receive love, to foster understanding, and to create a community where every individual feels valued and accepted. In our work together, we understand that love is not always easy. Each of us carries a unique story, shaped by our past experiences, which can sometimes cloud our ability to fully embrace love in all its forms. Yet, it is through this very acknowledgment of our histories that we can cultivate a deeper compassion for ourselves and for one another. By choosing to listen without judgment, we create a safe space where healing and transformation can occur. I want to take this moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our donors, volunteers, community partners, and dedicated team members. Your unwavering support and commitment to serving our community embody the essence of love without borders. Each of you plays a crucial role in helping individuals navigate their challenges, transforming your own unique experiences into paths of empowerment and service. Together, we strive to build a community where no one judges another, where every person has the opportunity to thrive, and where love is the foundation of our collective efforts. Your contributions have made a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve, and for that, I am eternally grateful. As we move forward, let us continue to champion this message of love, acceptance, and understanding. Let us work hand in hand to dismantle barriers and foster connections that uplift and inspire.

Thank you for being a vital part of our mission. Together, we can create a Roanoke Valley where love truly knows no borders.

With gratitude,

Rachel Hopkins CEO, CHIP of Roanoke Valley

This year, Child Health Investment Partnership (CHIP) of Roanoke Valley continued to walk alongside families with young children, offering support, resources, and care during some of life’s most challenging moments. From medical, dental, and mental health services to parent education and early childhood support, CHIP remained a steady presence for those who need it most. At the heart of our work is the belief that every child deserves the chance to thrive, regardless of where they live or the obstacles they face. That is what love without borders looks like: meeting families where they are, showing up without judgment, building trust, and extending care beyond traditional boundaries. Our home visiting model brings healthcare and support directly into the home, fostering strong relationships and long-term well-being. We also have advocated for our families, helping them navigate complex systems and access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Thanks to the generosity and dedication

of our staff, volunteers, community partners, and donors, CHIP is helping to build a healthier, more equitable, and more connected Roanoke Valley, one family at a time.

Investing in Impact A snapshot of our balance sheet and ways your giving can make a lasting difference

You’ve worked hard to build your retirement savings, now let them work for you and the causes you care about. If you’re 70½ or older, you can make a charitable donation directly from your IRA to CHIP of Roanoke Valley. Your gift counts toward your required minimum distribution, and because it goes to a charity, you won’t pay taxes on the amount. At any age, you can also name CHIP of Roanoke Valley as a beneficiary of your retirement account. Many donors choose to leave retirement assets to charity because they are taxed differently than other types of assets, allowing you to pass along other investments to family while supporting the causes you love. The best part? Your gift costs you nothing now, and you can always adjust your plan if your circumstances change. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR IRA!

A Year of Impact and Love A look back at the moments, milestones, and meaningful connections that shaped this year

Fiscal year 2024–2025 has been one of the most exciting yet here at CHIP of Roanoke Valley. We kicked off the year with our 3rd annual Back-to-School Celebration, where we handed out 500 backpacks and provided 67 free haircuts. We continued to see great success with our 23rd annual Breakfast with Santa. This past year’s event was our most successful yet, with three sold-out seatings and a day full of new and improved interactive activities. These two signature CHIP events get better every year. We also introduced two initiatives that brought even more joy and connection to our families and the broader community. Family Winterfest, a new celebration just for enrolled families, included a toy shop, dinner, and a cupcake decorating station. We loved seeing families come together to share in the holiday spirit. This year, we launched an additional Wellness Rodeo location at Melrose Plaza, in partnership with Calm Clinic and Caravan and United Way. The Melrose community has welcomed us with open arms, and we’re grateful to bring vital wellness resources to this vibrant neighborhood. One of our biggest achievements this fiscal year was the remodel of our basement. Thanks to the generosity of the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, Jeff Woods, and Avis Construction, we were able to complete our dream of a newly renovated, fully functioning Family Resource Center. This space is critical to our work at CHIP, and we were thrilled to host a ribbon cutting in April to celebrate the transformation of the basement, along with several other areas that have been reimagined in recent years. These updates make it easier than ever to provide high-quality care and support to the families we serve. Of course, it wouldn’t be a CHIP update without celebrating the generosity of our donors. We’re proud to share that we surpassed our fundraising goal by $76,643. These funds go directly back into our programs and help us continue building a stronger, healthier community. Be sure to visit our website and sign up for our newsletter to stay connected throughout the year.

“As I sit and reflect on my first year at CHIP, all I can think to say is how thankful I am to be part of such an amazing organization and community. Our dedicated and caring staff make it easy for me to do my job and reach my fundraising goals. CHIP is a vital piece of our community, and I’m grateful I get to share our mission and values with others. I love seeing families thrive. It’s the best reminder of why we do what we do. I also love seeing the community come together for our signature events. There’s nothing like watching so many people show up to support children and families. From planning events to creating fun staff self-care activities, I truly enjoy all my days at CHIP. Our work wouldn’t be possible without our amazing donors, volunteers, and community partners. So thank you for supporting CHIP and for helping make our community a better place. I’m excited to see what my next year at CHIP holds and can’t wait to keep building on the incredible work we’re doing together.”

Tge·he«, We G«Ñ Expanding care with compassion and commitment

In October 2024, we expanded our mental health services to include all family members living in the home: older siblings, parents, and other relatives of our CHIP-enrolled children. Our Director of Mental Health, LaTonya, is dedicated to meeting people where they are. For clients not yet ready to fully commit to therapy, she offers supportive counseling in the form of five mental health chats, helping meet immediate needs in an approachable way. Alongside these service expansions, our Mental Health Building also received meaningful updates during recent renovations. A fresh coat of paint, comforting new furniture, and wall-mounted sensory activities have transformed the space into a welcoming environment. To cap it off, a neon sign warmly reminds every visitor: “ You Belong ”. Families now walk in feeling more at ease and supported in their journey toward healing. Looking ahead, CHIP is carrying that mantra into fiscal year 2025– 2026 by building on our already exceptional mental health services. We are actively seeking funding to bring on a full-time bilingual therapist, a critical step for serving the 40% of our enrolled families who are Spanish-speaking. In Roanoke, access to bilingual mental health providers is extremely limited and all providers maintain long waitlists. Hiring a bilingual therapist would help ensure our families have reliable, timely access to care without facing language barriers. Another goal for the year ahead is to launch mobile Play Therapy, meeting families not just mentally but physically where they are. This service would help eliminate common barriers such as transportation and childcare, while ensuring children can access care in spaces that feel comfortable and familiar. At CHIP, we believe every family deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. By expanding our reach, investing in accessibility, and staying grounded in compassion, we are creating a stronger, more inclusive community where all families can thrive. Together, we are building a future where mental health care is not a privilege, but a promise

“My tenure at CHIP began in 2017, bringing with me years of experience in community mental health. The intimacy of this role, working closely with our home visiting staff and joining them on visits, broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the psychological harm experienced by intentionally marginalized groups, and how those harms compound other personal struggles. What this experience did not change, but instead intensified, was my commitment to making service delivery more culturally sensitive and responsive. It also strengthened my empathy for families’ day-to-day challenges and my understanding of how societal “isms” contribute to mental health concerns.

The CHIP Counseling Center works to remove barriers to quality mental and emotional health services for enrolled caregivers, children, and family members in the same home. We provide psychotherapy in our clinic, virtually, and in the community, including green walking spaces. We plan to continue expanding culturally responsive care by adding mobile Play Therapy, broadening perinatal mood disorder screening, hiring a bilingual therapist, and offering both mainstream and integrative healing interventions.”
