Bereavement Leave

Employees who wish to take time off due to the death of an immediate family member must notify Dr. Beamer immediately. Up to three (3) days unpaid time off will be granted to allow the employee to attend the funeral and make necessary arrangements associated with the death of the immediate family member. (Employees may use vacation pay benefits for this time, if they choose.) Community Animal Clinic defines “immediate family” as an employee’s spouse, parent, child, or sibling; the employee’s spouse’s parent, child or sibling; the employee’s child’s spouse; grandparents or grandchildren.

Immediate family also includes any person who legally acted in one of the above capacities or another relative who lived at the employee’s residence.

Jury Duty / Witness Leave

Community Animal Clinic will comply with Va. Code Ann. § 18.2-465.1 and shall not discriminate against any person who is summoned as a juror in a court proceeding. The employee may, but is not required, to use PTO for Jury Duty Employees must show the jury duty summons to Dr. Beamer as soon as possible so that they may make arrangements to accommodate the absence. Employees are expected to report to work whenever the court schedule permits. For purposes of Witness Duty, employees must use any unused paid vacation time off to receive compensation for the period of the absence. The subpoena must be shown to Dr. Beamer immediately after it is received so that operating requirements can be adjusted, where necessary, to accommodate the employee’s absence. The employee is expected to report to work whenever the court schedule permits. The policy for witness testimony shall not apply to any employee who is a defendant /respondent in a criminal proceeding. Either Community Animal Clinic or the employee may request an excuse from jury duty if, in Community Animal Clinic’s judgment, the employee’s absence would create serious operational difficulties. Employees may use any unused paid vacation time off to receive compensation for the period of the absence.
