the most out of every dollar. The clinic has taken on the role of not just treating patients with acute and chronic health conditions, but also providing community wellness and education opportunities to preserve the health state of the community prior to the occurrence of disease. The current staff and service providers have embraced the roles of wellness experts and have established programs such as chronic care management, medication reconciliation, continuous blood glucose monitoring, Blue Bag Program, annual wellness visits and immunizations, as well as disease state education and self-care education. The clinic has taken responsibility for provision of medical transportation financial assistance, with funding from the Wythe-Bland Foundation, for consultative medical appointments to regional providers. BHMC has also partnered with Big Walker Dentistry to refer patients for needed dental interventions and with the Virginia Telemental Health Initiative (VTMHI) to offer behavioral health services via telehealth. The clinic realizes that without the ongoing support of the community it serves the services listed above would not be possible and the clinic’s role in the community would regress. We are grateful for the support of so many donors who have given so generously to our cause. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Brock Hughes Free Clinic formation. As we celebrate this landmark anniversary, the Clinic and I look forward with great anticipation toward the opportunities that lie ahead for growth and further ministry to those citizens of Wythe and Bland Counties who depend upon BHMC for their healthcare now, for another 30 years, and beyond. I know that I will be cheering it on and I am sure you will be, too!

2025 marks a time of change and transition for the Brock Hughes Medical Center (BHMC) and for me. The Clinic will be celebrating 30 years of service to the citizens of Wythe and Bland Counties, providing low cost, compassionate, and high-quality medical, pharmaceutical, and preventive health care. I am rotating off the Board of Directors after fulfilling my 6 year term, five of which was as Chair. So what have we accomplished? The clinic was born in 1995 out of the compassion of volunteer nurses and medical practitioners who sought to provide basic health care to those citizens of Wythe and Bland counties who could not afford or access health care services otherwise. It was primarily a part-time endeavor working out of a variety of rented facilities and providing well-intentioned but basic primary care services. Since that time, the clinic has grown to the entity it is today — a robust hybrid clinic which not only serves the underinsured and uninsured with low-cost but high quality medical care, but also serves individuals who are insured but who choose BHMC as their primary health care provider for the warm, caring atmosphere and convenience of schedule and location. The clinic now has a permanent home located on West Monroe Street in Wytheville which is modern, bright and appealing. The clinic employs 10 full and part time staff, including a nurse practitioner, medical director, a pharmacist, pharmacy technician, and several health care support and administrative personnel. From humble beginnings to its current status as a valuable pillar of the community, BHMC has grown with the ever-changing healthcare industry while still maintaining that home grown atmosphere of compassionate service. As I reflect on these past 6 years, I realize that I have been privileged to witness the establishment of our current clinic as an in-demand hybrid care provider while weathering the unprecedented challenges of low reimbursement rates by insurers and the global pandemic health crisis. Through it all, the clinic has sought diversified funding sources to allow for continued provision of high-quality health care, as well as strategizing ways to optimize the funding that has been received, squeezing

A licia Grizzle is a long-term employee of a local nursing home in the admissions department. Her employer offers health insurance, however, being a single mother and always conscientious of her finances like so many others, she found it very difficult to

seen by the clinic; she feared her income was too high to qualify for services. She was shocked that BHMC was in fact able to see her. When she established care as a new patient at BHMC in May 2024, her A1C was 10.1%. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends an A1C goal of less than 7% for most adults with diabetes. Her level was high because she had been unable to afford the diabetic medications. She was relieved to learn she could in fact obtain the diabetic medications she desperately needed through the prescription assistance program at BHMC, with the help of Medication Assistance Coordinator Teresa Gilman, CPhT. Alicia participates in BHMC’s Chronic Care Management program, which allows her the opportunity for individualized visits with Keri Sword, Pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist for the clinic. Participation in this program provides her with Continuous Glucose Monitoring equipment. According to her most recent lab work, her A1C was at 7.1%, almost at the goal for those with Type 2 diabetes. “The regular visits with Dr. Sword help me stay on track, knowing someone is watching over me. The attentive and caring staff, coupled with the services BHMC offers, make it possible for me to take care of my health, and family, and feel better than I have since being diagnosed as diabetic.”

afford the cost of the insurance. After being diagnosed with diabetes, she was very disheartened that her high-premium health insurance would not cover most of the diabetic medications she needed. She found herself unable to seek the necessary treatment for her chronic disease. Alicia saw several different providers and even a diabetes specialist, but she felt that no one truly cared about her on a personal level or about her inability to afford her medications. “I felt like I was at a dead end, consistently running into a brick wall, despite my efforts to take care of my health.” A co worker recommended Brock Hughes Medical Center (BHMC). Initially, Alicia did not believe that she would be able to be

Jerry's family

J E R R Y H U R T T he BHMC golf tournament is named for the late Jerry Hurt who was serving as treasurer of the Brock Hughes Medical Center Board of Directors at the time of his untimely death in 2018. Jerry Hurt was a pillar in our community. He graduated from Rural Retreat High School, Wytheville Community College, Virginia Tech, and received his MBA from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies (WVU). He began his professional career with the

Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, which later became Elkem Metals USA, where he served as President. Later, Jerry specialized in the development and diversification of numerous small business ventures. He retired from Starck Van Lines (Pittsburgh) in 2014 after serving as CEO. Upon retirement, Jerry and his wife Phyllis returned to the town they loved, Rural Retreat, VA,

and the extended family they treasured. Jerry contributed an enormous amount of his time, talents and money to churches, this community, foundations, boards, civic organizations and individuals throughout Wythe County. A successful businessman, he led with intelligence and kindness, garnering respect along the way. Hurt was very passionate in his work at BHMC. He believed that a golf tournament was just what BHMC needed as a “signature” fundraiser, an event that would be recognizable to the community every year. Executive Director Stacey Linkous, along with several board members, ensured that Jerry’s vision became a reality in 2019. The Hurt Family has supported the tournament since its inaugural year. BHMC was very fortunate to have Jerry. His vision for BHMC has been fulfilled; the Jerry Hurt Memorial Golf Tournament has become a very special community event each summer. It’s a time to celebrate and remember Jerry, while also supporting BHMC.

Thank you to all our supporters who made donations during this past fiscal year, October 1, 2023-September 30, 2024. An individual donation over $500 (or over $616 for businesses), could qualify. Ask me for more details, if not familiar with this program.
