We believe that every person has the right to health care services that are:
Dear Friend, Since 1995, the clinic has grown exponentially and seen many changes. Our hope is that this report provides a brief snapshot into the “good” that continues to happen every day at BHMC, despite the last several years of uncertainty due to the COVID pandemic. No longer known as “the free clinic,” the staff and Board of Directors at BHMC continue to focus on expanding services for those citizens of Wythe and Bland Counties who are uninsured or insured with Medicaid or Medicare. Without the support of our donors and community partners, BHMC would have been unable to complete a much-needed exterior facelift this past year, “Project Raise the Roof.” Patients can now feel proud of their medical home. Our Chronic Care Management program and Healthy Lifestyle Classes continue to support our patients in taking proactive health measures such as smoking cessation and diet and lifestyle changes. Regardless of all the changes, the focus of BHMC continues to be to serve those who otherwise would not have access to high quality healthcare services. Thank You for your support, which has helped ensure the existence of BHMC in the community for 25+ years. Sincerely,
Accessible Affordable
Culturally Appropriate Delivered with Dignity
and Respect High-Quality Equitable Timely
The staff are always so caring. They always listen and give their full attention.

B HMC began as a “Free Clinic”, housed at the Wythe County Health Department, and staffed by all volunteers who donated their time after-hours. Today, BHMC employs full and part-time staff and owns our building. BHMC is now considered a hybrid clinic , serving those of all ages who are without health insurance, have Medicaid, Medicare or commercial insurance. No longer known as “the free clinic”, but still a nonprofit whose mission is to serve a vulnerable population. BHMC will continue to grow and expand services for those citizens of Wythe and Bland Counties who depend upon BHMC for their healthcare needs. HISTORY

Brock Hughes Free Clinic begins at the Wythe County Health Department.
Relocated to the Edgemont Center, staffed by part time employees, with clinic hours during the day. *More accessible for patients
Received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
Relocated to the leased Pine Street location.
Began offering the Medication Assistance Program to anyone in the community needing assistance with obtaining prescriptions, insured or uninsured.
After extensive interior renovations, the clinic relocated to 450 West Monroe Street. The building was purchased with a grant from the Wythe-Bland Foundation, allowing for funds to be allocated to services instead of lease payments.
Began doing business as Brock Hughes Medical Center (BHMC).
Providers are always friendly, thorough and compassionate about my situation. I feel like they really care.

BHMC began offering primary healthcare services to children under 18.
Medicaid expanded in Virginia and BHMC became a hybrid clinic, providing services to patients of all ages who are uninsured or insured with Medicaid or Medicare. *Some commercial insurances accepted
Began offering lab services onsite, Covid testing and treatment, and Chronic Care Management program. A partnership with Bland Ministry Center made it possible for BHMC patients to have access to dental services in the same building.
Began offering women’s health exams and VHSL sports physicals. Kicked off the “Raise the Roof” campaign to raise funds for a new roof and parking lot.
Began offering monthly wellness classes and the Medical Transportation Program for the Wythe-Bland communities. Completed “Project Raise the Roof” renovations.
2022
RAISE ROOF the P R O J E C T
2021
New hip roof with guttering Covered front and side entrances Shutters and street numbers Handicap accessible doors
2014
New handicap accessible sidewalk New paved parking lot, with striping New landscaping New ceiling tiles (damage from the previous roof leaking)
Accomplishments:
T he Wythe-Bland Foundation awarding BHMC a grant to purchase the building was a tremendous contribution, however, the roof was in dire need of replacement and the parking lot needed repaving and striping. The previous outdated “flat” roof collected standing water rather than direct it toward downspouts. The result was damage to the roof surface and constant leakage through the ceiling beams and down the interior walls and out from ceiling tiles in the clinic. The parking lot had been partially paved prior to 2013 (the exact date is unknown). It was crumbling, deteriorated at the edges and seams, and riddled with dangerous potholes. The handicap accessible sidewalk had major cracks. This project was a matter of safety, not just beautification, however the end result is a stupendous transformation. Now it looks like a medical facility, the exterior matches the quality services on the interior. BHMC is grateful to The Cabell Foundation, Wythe-Bland Foundation, an anonymous foundation, and numerous community organizations and donors who helped make “Project Raise the Roof” successful. BHMC patients now have a medical home they can feel proud of.
The transformation from a damaged roof, parking lot, and interior to NOW!
A complex form of arthritis, known as gout, brought James to Brock Hughes Medical Center in 2017. Employed at the Bolling Wilson Hotel as a general maintenance worker, James did not have health insurance. He had recently been seen at the Bland Ministry Center dental clinic, which is how he found out about BHMC. After his first visit and labs, James realized he had more going on than just gout. He was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure, and his cholesterol was high. He knew he had always struggled with anxiety but had never been treated. Today his A1C (blood sugar level) has decreased significantly, his cholesterol is much lower, and his blood pressure is regulated. His anxiety is also controlled. Mr. Graybeal said the care he has received while at BHMC has improved his life significantly. He feels so much better and doesn’t worry as he once did. Mr. Graybeal believes God is the reason for everything and he knows He is the reason he found BHMC. “The clinic and every single staff member have been a blessing to me. They are all so very nice, they genuinely care, they listen and ask questions, I am treated as a person and not just a number. Most doctor’s offices I have been to in the past just want to get you in and get you out, but not BHMC.” Mr. Graybeal and his wife have been together for 35 years. They have 3 children and 11 grandchildren. Thanks to BHMC he gets to enjoy life with his family and can continue being the “anything man” to many; anything anyone needs help with, he’s your guy. By the grace of God, Mr. Graybeal has so much to be thankful for and in return he will continue giving back.
I am treated as a person and not just a number.

J E R R Y H U R T T he The BHMC golf tournament is named for the late Jerry Hurt who was serving as treasurer of the Brock Hughes Medical Center at the time of his untimely death in 2018. Jerry Hurt was a pillar in our community. He graduated from Rural Retreat High School, Wytheville Community College, Virginia Tech, and received his MBA from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies (WVU). He began his professional career with the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, which later became Elkem Metals USA, where he served as president. Later, Jerry specialized in the development and diversification of numerous small
business ventures. He retired from Starck Van Lines (Pittsburgh) in 2014 after serving as CEO. Upon retirement, Jerry and his wife Phyllis returned to the town they loved, Rural Retreat, VA, and the extended family they treasured. Jerry contributed an enormous amount of his time, talents and money to churches, this community, foundations, boards, civic organizations and individuals throughout Wythe County. A successful businessman, he led with intelligence and kindness, garnering respect along the way. Hurt was very passionate in his work at BHMC. He believed that a golf tournament was just what
BHMC needed as a “signature” fundraiser, an event that would be recognizable to the community every year. Executive Director Stacey Linkous, along with several board members, ensured that Jerry’s vision became a reality in 2019. The Hurt Family has supported the tournament since its’ inaugural year.
BHMC was very fortunate to have Jerry. His vision for BHMC has been fulfilled; the Jerry Hurt Memorial Golf Tournament has become a very special community event each August. It’s a time to celebrate the life of Jerry and support BHMC.
