FISCAL YEAR OCT 2024–SEPT 2025
the Mission The Mission of Brock Hughes Medical Center is to provide affordable, compassionate, and high-quality medical, pharmaceutical, and preventive health care services to the uninsured and insured residents of Wythe and Bland Counties.
30 th Anniversary Party & Fundraiser A roaring twenties–themed celebration honoring three decades of compassionate, community-centered healthcare was held at The Homestead on Saturday September 13, 2025. The event brought together supporters, partners, and friends of the clinic to celebrate BHMC’s legacy while raising critical funds in support of its mission. The evening also included a moment of remembrance to honor former Board Members Jerry Hurt and Jamie Hinkle for their invaluable contributions to the clinic prior to their passing. Dr. Brock Hughes and Mrs. Hughes were likewise remembered and recognized for their lasting impact on the organization. During the event, Executive Director Stacey Linkous delivered remarks on behalf of the clinic, as well as Rufus Phillips, CEO of the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (VAFCC), and Rachel Rees, CEO of the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF). Both expressed their ongoing commitment to BHMC’s mission and to improving health outcomes for underserved Virginians. Linkous has served as Executive Director since January 2016 and is one of only three executive directors in the clinic’s 30-year history. This celebration was not only a reflection of how far the clinic has come, but also a meaningful step toward the future— ensuring continued expansion of access to care for all who need it.
Clinic Obtains Nonprofit Status In 2005, the clinic achieved independent 501(c) (3) nonprofit status and officially became Brock Hughes Free Clinic, Inc. Thanks to the support of the Wythe-Bland Foundation, the clinic moved to its current home at 450 West Monroe Street in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, the clinic adopted its current name: Brock Hughes Medical Center. Free Clinic Transitions to a Hybrid Clinic, Accepting Uninsured & Insured Patients With the expansion of Medicaid in Virginia in 2019, many residents still fell through the cracks—earning too much to qualify for Medicaid, yet unable to afford health insurance. In response, BHMC transitioned from a “free clinic” to a “hybrid” care model, continuing to serve the uninsured while also accepting patients covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance plans.
F ounded in September 1995 in honor of the late Dr. Charles Brock Hughes, the Brock Hughes Medical Center
(BHMC) was born from the shared vision of compassionate medical professionals at Wythe County Community Hospital who recognized the urgent need for accessible, affordable healthcare. While in medical school, Dr. Hughes was taught—and firmly believed—that physicians have a responsibility to provide charitable care to those in need. Reflecting this philosophy, the clinic operated for many years on a volunteer basis, offering free primary care services from various locations, including the Wythe County Health Department, Edgemont Center, and Pine Street location.

MEET Jennifer
W hen Jennifer Freeman discovered Brock Hughes Medical Center (BHMC) while searching
was referred to the BHMC Chronic Care Management Program for additional support. Through the program, Jennifer gained access to a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). Without insurance, CGM sensors can cost between $150 and $350 per month. Jennifer received her sensors from the BHMC pharmacy for just $7 every two weeks. Jennifer began meeting biweekly with Dr. Sword, BHMC’s pharmacist and diabetes educator, who provided hands on guidance, reviewed her glucose readings, and helped adjust her treatment plan. Her CGM readings were securely transmitted to the clinic, allowing for close monitoring and timely recommendations. The CGM also became a powerful educational tool. Jennifer could see in real time how her food choices impacted her blood sugar. With this knowledge, she made meaningful dietary changes. As her numbers improved, she was even able to safely reduce the dose of one of her diabetes medications. In just three months, Jennifer’s A1C dropped from 11.5% to 6.4%, well below the recommended target. Jennifer says the compassionate care she receives at Brock Hughes Medical Center has transformed her understanding of diabetes and empowered her to take control of her health. Her story is a powerful example of how access to affordable care, patient education, and ongoing support can truly change lives.
online in 2024, she was facing a difficult reality. A homemaker who had recently lost her health insurance coverage, Jennifer could no longer afford visits with her previous provider or pay for her medications at a retail pharmacy. She needed affordable, accessible care and she found it at BHMC. The BHMC team immediately began assisting Jennifer through in-house pharmacy services, ensuring she had access to the medications she needed without the overwhelming financial burden. In September 2025, during a routine visit, lab work revealed her A1C was 11.5%, significantly above the recommended goal of under 7% for individuals living with diabetes. This level placed her at serious risk for complications. Her provider prescribed Ozempic and metformin. Jennifer received Ozempic through the Medication Assistance Program (MAP) at BHMC. This program saved her approximately $950 a month! Despite starting treatment, Jennifer continued to experience large fluctuations in her blood sugar levels. In November, she
