Brock Hughes Annual Report 2024-2025

30 th Anniversary Party & Fundraiser A roaring twenties–themed celebration honoring three decades of compassionate, community-centered healthcare was held at The Homestead on Saturday September 13, 2025. The event brought together supporters, partners, and friends of the clinic to celebrate BHMC’s legacy while raising critical funds in support of its mission. The evening also included a moment of remembrance to honor former Board Members Jerry Hurt and Jamie Hinkle for their invaluable contributions to the clinic prior to their passing. Dr. Brock Hughes and Mrs. Hughes were likewise remembered and recognized for their lasting impact on the organization. During the event, Executive Director Stacey Linkous delivered remarks on behalf of the clinic, as well as Rufus Phillips, CEO of the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (VAFCC), and Rachel Rees, CEO of the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF). Both expressed their ongoing commitment to BHMC’s mission and to improving health outcomes for underserved Virginians. Linkous has served as Executive Director since January 2016 and is one of only three executive directors in the clinic’s 30-year history. This celebration was not only a reflection of how far the clinic has come, but also a meaningful step toward the future— ensuring continued expansion of access to care for all who need it.

Clinic Obtains Nonprofit Status In 2005, the clinic achieved independent 501(c) (3) nonprofit status and officially became Brock Hughes Free Clinic, Inc. Thanks to the support of the Wythe-Bland Foundation, the clinic moved to its current home at 450 West Monroe Street in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, the clinic adopted its current name: Brock Hughes Medical Center. Free Clinic Transitions to a Hybrid Clinic, Accepting Uninsured & Insured Patients With the expansion of Medicaid in Virginia in 2019, many residents still fell through the cracks—earning too much to qualify for Medicaid, yet unable to afford health insurance. In response, BHMC transitioned from a “free clinic” to a “hybrid” care model, continuing to serve the uninsured while also accepting patients covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance plans.

F ounded in September 1995 in honor of the late Dr. Charles Brock Hughes, the Brock Hughes Medical Center

(BHMC) was born from the shared vision of compassionate medical professionals at Wythe County Community Hospital who recognized the urgent need for accessible, affordable healthcare. While in medical school, Dr. Hughes was taught—and firmly believed—that physicians have a responsibility to provide charitable care to those in need. Reflecting this philosophy, the clinic operated for many years on a volunteer basis, offering free primary care services from various locations, including the Wythe County Health Department, Edgemont Center, and Pine Street location.
