MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL & HEAD OF SCHOOL Friends, As we begin our 130th year at Roanoke Catholic School we also celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. This year will be filled with celebraƟon and thanks to thousands of people who have made our diocese, parishes and schools feel like home. With each passing day, our students share their giŌs with us in so many ways. They achieve at the highest levels in their academic studies, their athleƟc endeavors, their faith development and their love of the arts. In recent years we have seen new life and energy displayed through our visual and performing arts programs at RCS. Students now enjoy choir, dance, theater/drama, art, band and, hopefully in the future, orchestra. A number of our students parƟcipate outside of school in ballet, youth theater and orchestra, choirs, individual voice, piano and instrumental lessons. These talents and commitments by our students and parents help make our school community stronger and more vibrant. Funding for the arts has always been a challenge for schools both public and independent. Given that tuiƟon alone does not cover the total cost for educaƟon we rely on the kind acts of charity by hundreds of friends and donors each year. This past spring our school was blessed with a significant contribuƟon by Dr. and Mrs. Robert White and Sue Rowe of Melody Haven. Their combined giŌ brought new band instruments — totaling $30,000 — to our students. This was the first Ɵme in more than 30 years that our school has received an investment of this magnitude for a specific arts program. AddiƟonally, students in our art department are conƟnually exposed to new opportuniƟes and tremendous offerings. Recently a mural was unveiled and displayed at the Roanoke City Courthouse aŌer a year of work and dedicaƟon by a dozen students and our art teacher, Kim Spencer. Our school choir, under the direcƟon of Michael Hemphill, has competed on a naƟonal stage and been recognized by leadership in our diocese for its performance in our Cathedral. Despite the absence of our own theater/auditorium, our drama department consistently delivers outstanding performances featuring students from elementary through high school. I strongly encourage you to aƩend one of our two performances this upcoming year and celebrate the accomplishments of our students. We truly have a lot to be thankful for this upcoming academic year. I look forward to seeing you on campus and celebraƟng events throughout the year in recogniƟon of our students, staff and local parishes. Blessings to all of you,

The parents of two CelƟcs alumnae, the Whites were recognized during the Choir & Band Spring Concert along with Sue Rowe of Melody Haven, who coordinated discount purchasing of the instruments and donated some items too.
Eleven RCS art students spent the 2018‐19 school year planning and designing a 5’ by 10’ mural, “Angelus Stella,” that now adorns the Oliver W. Scholarship Awards Dinner
In lieu of past Honors Day ceremonies, Roanoke Catholic began a new tradition on May 22, 2019, when more than 200 people gathered in the Gillespie Family Gymnasium to recognize our student scholarship winners and celebrate the generous supporters who make these scholarships possible.
Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarships Mary Gillespie Hardie Scholarships
Carmen Kuehler, 11th, (pictured left), Alex Zaragoza, 3rd, and Abby Algeier ’19 (University of Mary Washington) each received a $1,000. Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarship for their strong work ethic and scholastic performance to the best of their indicated ability. A 1938 graduate of Roanoke Catholic School, Dr. Keeley lived a life of commitment to helping others through his dedication and compassion; he demonstrated his gratitude for God’s gifts and believed in the dignity of all people. An avid supporter of the arts and firm believer in Catholic education, Dr. Keeley maintained that the strength of a community’s future is built upon the legacy of previous generations. Dr. Keeley and his wife of 65 years, Nina, instilled in their 15 children a love of learning and the satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. All Keeley children graduated RCS. Scholarship recipients recognize the value of an engaged citizen whose membership in the school community enriches it. These students are selfless, unassuming people, worthy of the admiration and respect of their peers.
The 2019 Mary Gillespie Hardie Scholarships were presented to Zoe Classey, 3rd, and El Amin Shareef, 11th, for exemplifying the qualities of Mary Gillespie Hardie: intelligence and passion for learning, dignity and humility, great warmth and charity of spirit, and love of God. A graduate of Our Lady of Nazareth and a St. Andrews and Roanoke Catholic High parent, Mrs. Hardie believed that every child deserved a first‐rate education, and instilled in her own children a love of learning and the satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. Roanoke Catholic School thanks Robert Hardie '83 and Molly Hardie for their generous support of these scholarships that fund full tuition, books, uniforms, and cafeteria charges for a lower school and upper school student.
