7:2 Stability of elements at ppb concentra'on levels

Adsorp'on

Adsorp'on is divided into the following physical or chemical types:

• Physical adsorp'on is an a9rac'on between the solid surface and adsorbing species consis'ng of van der waals interac'ons. • Chemical adsorp'on or chemisorp'on is a chemical interac'on which is strong enough to break or form chemical bonds. • Types of losses such as ion-exchange, reduc'on, precipita'on, and diffusion into a permeable solid are oDen also treated as adsorp'on.

In this course, adsorp'on is taken to mean loss through the combined effects of all interac'ons with the walls of vessels or with filter paper.
