PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Each school board shall require the daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in each classroom of the school division and shall ensure that the flag of the United States is in place in each such classroom. Each school board shall determine the appropriate time during the school day for the recitation of the Pledge. During the

Pledge of Allegiance, students shall stand and recite the Pledge while facing the flag with their right hands over their hearts or in an appropriate salute if in uniform; however, no student shall be compelled to recite the Pledge if he, his parent or legal guardian objects on religious, philosophical or other grounds to his

participating in this exercise. Students who are thus exempt from reciting the Pledge shall remain quietly standing or sitting at their desks while others recite the Pledge and shall make no display that disrupts or distracts others who are reciting the Pledge. School boards shall provide appropriate accommodations for students who are unable to comply with the procedures described herein due to disability. The school board’s code of conduct shall apply to disruptive behavior during the recitation of the Pledge in the same manner as provided for other circumstances of such behavior.

Floyd County Schools maintains a program of homebound instruction for students who are confined at home or in a health care facility for periods that would prevent normal school attendance based upon certification of need by a licensed physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or clinical psychologist. Credit for the work shall be awarded when it is done under the supervision of a licensed teacher, a person eligible to hold a Virginia license, or other appropriately licensed professional, employed by the School Board, and there is evidence that the

instructional time requirements or alternative means of awarding credit adopted by the school board have been met. Homebound forms may be obtained at the student’s school or at the Floyd County School Board Office. If you have any questions, please call the Director of Special Education & Student Services at 745- 9400.

MOMENT OF SILENCE

SUPPLEMENTAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE POLICY REMINDER

The Floyd County School Board recognizes that a moment of silence before each school day prepares students and staff for their respective work or school days. Therefore, each teacher shall observe a moment of silence at the beginning of the first class of each school day.

In April 2018, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) changed the minimum recommended age for the tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) adolescent booster vaccine from 10 to 11 years. Although the vaccine is approved by the FDA to be given at a younger age as part of a catch-up-schedule, a routine adolescent booster dose of Tdap should be administered at no one younger than 11 years of age. To align with current ACIP recommendations, the 2019 General Assembly passed HB 2215 that changes the grade in which students receive Tdap vaccine from sixth to seventh grade. Students who received a Tdap immunization at age ten will not need another Tdap vaccine to enter seventh grade.

Floyd County High School students participate in a variety of academic competitions throughout the year. These include, but are not limited to, the MACC team, VHSL Academic Competition, the Math Club, One Act Play, various FFA local/regional/state competitions, Forensics, and the Debate Team. Dates are not available. Please call Floyd County High School for further information.

There is a supplemental accident insurance policy that Floyd County Schools provides for its students. This insurance policy would serve as secondary to any policy that you currently hold and is not a guarantee to pay remaining balances after primary pays what they are responsible for. In the event your child has an accident or injury while at school or participating in school activities such as athletics, field trips, etc., please notify the main office. They will provide you with the Student Accident Claim Form. Claims must be filed within 90 days from the date of injury. If you have any questions, please contact the main office of your child’s school.
