Honor Winfree says she believes that her sister Hope and herself are the last members of the Glasgow family. Honor Winfree Benson is a Richmond native, and former teacher. In Cast by Iron , Benson shed light on the family secret that she is the great-great niece of Ellen Glasgow, the Pulitzer Prize winning author famous for her writing on relationships such as The Deliverance . Glasgow passed away with the secret of having African American relatives, an untold story that Honor Winfree Benson discusses as well as the racial ties within the Glasgow family. Ellen Glasgow’s father, Francis Thomas Glasgow, who was the manager for Tredegar Iron Works, had an affair with Emma Jackson, who was a maid that came from the Pamunkey Indian reservation. Through the affair Jackson and Francis Glasgow produced two sons, however William Winfree was the only one to have children. Francis Glasgow sent his African American sons to live with Mary Winfree, a Black woman. Although he sent his

A. Winfree Jr., an exceptional artist who went to Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., during 1950. This book discusses lineage, love, and even the mystery that was her family’s identity. She also includes artwork, pictures, documents that proves her story and her family’s story. Jasmyn Taylor is a rising senior at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations and has a minor in Spanish. Taylor plans to attend law school with the hope of improving policy geared toward minorities.
