Each of the five has at least one creative “twist”—for example, setting the tune in an asymmetrical meter, changing the usual melodic rhythm, or asking for an unexpectedly robust tempo; in each arrangement, this is counterbalanced by fulsome keyboard harmonies, rippling accompaniments, and small melodic interplays that, in my opinion, bring listeners’ attention to “the message in the music.” This same wry creativity and rich scoring will require both players to spend time in practice (alone and together) on some of the technical and musical matters. Here, for example, applying my “qualifications” outlined in the Burton review, I cannot sight-read the piano part with more than

Depending on skill level and experience, the organ part will require practice, and will have to be carefully worked out in rehearsal with the trumpeter. The good news is that the trumpet range is limited, and the organ part logical, and the potential appealing, so I’m passing it on to a local band director/trumpet major for December and starting in on the organ part!
